Albert Mohler, a Christian radio commentator who has long preached that Christians (read: educated, middle-class and above, conservative, English-speaking, Republican-voting, white Christians) who do not reproduce are practicing "moral rebellion against God," has produced yet another screed against the childfree.

This one now proclaims that we men who do not "fulfill our responsibilities as husbands and fathers" (apparently single guys now fall into the mix, too) are contributing directly to the decline of western civilization, and our lack of action will lead to poverty, global food shortages, plague, and a host of other societal ills.

Mr. Ignorant said:
Throughout human history, a persistent fall in birthrates has served as a harbinger of cultural decline and a warning of cultural collapse. The reasons for this are many, but center in the fact that the cause of falling birthrates is often a loss of social cohesion and confidence and the effect of falling reproduction rates is a decline in economic prosperity and erosion of the social structure.

I'm shocked that sane, intelligent people buy into the stuff this guy says.

Clearly science is very very bad in this man's world.
I'm sure that if a study were done and it turned out that just being Child Free increased a woman's risk of breast cancer, science would become this man's best friend.

Mohler is a little scary. And he loves to scapegoat. He likes to tell Christian parents that their propserity is being threatened by people like us. In other words, my childfreedom is going to cause an economic downfall and that means that Christian parents can't feed or provide adequately for their kids therefore I am to be condemned and reviled. Afterall my childfreedom is harming their kids...

Even scarier is that he is President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and his views are being taught to the next generation of Southern Baptist pastors. He is not just some fringe lunatic who posts his outlandish views on his own blog. He is revered by many, many people as a theological genius.

Sorry to get in on this so late after the fact, but I haven't been around and I just had to comment on this one. AM's a wacko. I read an article once in Christianity Today where he fired people for not sharing his view on predestination, because that made them too "liberal" in his eyes. I don't give him, or others like him, much crediblity as Christian speakers.

That's rather odd since God gave us sex for many reasons, not just procreation. Heck, Song of Solomon is a whole book about godly passionate sex for pleasure.

Of course, I don't think God would make it so people have no choice but to sin, as would be the case with couples unable to have kids if everyone is commanded to have kids.

I'm sorry that people unable to have kids, or have chosen to not have kids, have to listen to the trash some people peddle.

Just a side note to hopefully offer some encouragement, many of us studying to be pastors simply disregard what we find incorrect or unbiblical...like students at any other school. :)
