And rightfully so. The internet we have at this moment in time likely would be nowhere near as comprehensive or available to the widespread public (and with much sparser content) had Al Gore not seen the great potential in the DarpaNet and sponsored legislation to foster a nascent industry.

He didn't "invent the internet" - but it's fairly accurate to say it would not be what it is without him.

Why? His statements were completely correct. He didn't make any mistakes. It was a wilful misrepresentation of what he said that was mocked - and the sources that started the spiteful rumours and misrepresentations would have twisted anything he said.

It's really a shame that such a great technocrat, a guy whom we really should credit for having a place like CF at all, is and was mocked over a largely true and accurate statement. Say what you want about the rest of his politics, but everyone, everywhere, should be thankful for Al Gore and the political muscle he put behind internet development and creation.
