Airports are legally allowed to kick TSA out and hire private security. Thoughts?

Privacy and Security Fanatic: Airports Can Legally Opt-Out, Kick TSA Program to the Curb, and Instead Hire Private Security Screeners | Network World

Airports are legally allowed to kick out the TSA if they want to and hire private security. Considering the fact that the TSA is rather inept and miss 60-75% of the fake bombs put through to test them, ( source - Most fake bombs missed by screeners - USATODAY.com )

Do you think it would be better to give competing private security firms a crack at it?

I think I'd really like to see a pilot program of this tested. Might increase ticket prices, but if it works, it'd be worth it.

I would normally be worried about the restraints being placed upon the intrusiveness of the security measures, but it's clear the TSA no longer recognizes the 4th amendment of the Constitution in any way, shape or form.

I am waiting that terrorists get more creative. I think that trying to blow up a plane is peanuts against what would be scientifically possible ... Then help us God ...

Exactly. Screw another plane attack. Imagine a dozen 'Beslans' across America over the course of weeks.

I think we'd start to see some really unpleasent changes in American society very quickly.

Problem with the Israeli model is that it doesn't scale and would take far too much time and back up lines out the door.

It would be to used as a one of many ways to stop and detect terrorists.

Random, non uniformed behavioral profilers would be dispersed in the airport, to random strike up conversation and questioning of suspicious looking people. With bomb smelling dogs, and hand scanners, metal detectors, and pat down and backscatter tech being used as options of last resort.

And yes, ethnic profiling needs to be adapted as well. We all know who the enemy is, and we will never have any security until we stop lying to ourselves and confront the people trying to kill us.

We also need far better scanning of the international freight planes carry around with them.

Dear Lord! Let's do it already! The private firms certainly couldn't do a worse job than the TSA.

That's the consensus of many in the industry. Israel is the size of Florida with maybe only 3 major airports and not nearly the amount of domestic and international travel we have. The Israelis spend about 5 minutes question, borderline interrogating people boarding planes and entering the country.

We don't have the budget to hire and train the amount of people to do this so as not to dramatically lengthen line waits.

But we can have these wonder around doing this to suspicious looking people, and people that match the criteria of the enemy.

My question is, what happens when somebody who really wants to kill people either:

A. Smuggle explosives or whatever through security in a body cavity or
B. Figure out that the long lines created by security are good enough for mass casualties and detonate there.

I'm not going to submit to what they've got now, I'm certainly not going to submit to a cavity search. Forget that, I'll find another way there or stay home. Another question: If we're so scared, why don't we do this for trains, subways, buses, and highways too? It's not just planes and airports that are potential targets.

All excellent points. It only is a matter of time before someone puts a bomb in a body cavity and gets through. Or if they do get a bomb onto a train or subway. It may not kill thousands, but will achieve the goal of mass panic.

Our security is a joke. All smoke and mirrors to make us feel safer, without actually making us safer. In the end, you have ticked off passengers, and terrorists who will exploit they system sooner or later.
