To the east of the Maplewood Mall there's a large rectangular area that borders McKnight Road. Most of that used to be my grandpa and grandma's farm--from my mom's side.
Grandpa died when I was young--his tractor rolled over and killed him. The family dog wouldn't let anyone near him so my dad was called to go out there and get him.
I can remember back when I was in HS that my dad would occasionally have to go out there and help the police get the cows back inside the fence. Once he came home late and said that he and the policeman had walked all the way around the fence and couldn't find any break--so how did the cows get out? Years later we found out. We drove up into the driveway and saw some of the cows lying in the yard between the house and the barn--there was a HUGE lilac bush (think 20 feet tall) just oustide the house blocking the view of the barn. Anyway, the cows saw us and they proved that they weren't a bunch of dumb animals. They jumped to their feet and scrambled back into the pasture through an opening between the barn and the fence post that had, at one time, been tight up against the barn but was now leaning out aways a bit. The opening was so small that I would have had to go through sideways. But, here's these cows who are as wide as I can hold my arms out blitzing through it!
End of part 1.
