Age in Months

Today while on our walk, my nephew and I met a mother with 3 kids. One was about my nephews age, the other around 4 & a baby. We were talking while the kids went off to play and she's like "My oldest is 8 years the babies 14 months and my daughter is 46 months."

I can understand using months up to two years because the develop so much, each month is differant but after two it's just annoying or at least to me. I'm sitting there thinking...that's almost 4 right...

What's wrong with using years? Some parents use years after their kids turn one but others make it sound stupid...not like I go around telling people my nephew's 85 months old...Maybe it's just a pet peeve of mine.

I've never heard of that. Although I was thinking the other day "when do I stop referring to him in months?" and then I was thinking-- at 18 months, probably. Then he is 1 1/2, and 2. Because there is a big dif between a 1 year old and 1 1/2 year old (12 month and 18 month) so its probably worth mentioning until then. But this is also something I was wondering about.....

so when did you other parents stop saying months and start saying years for your children??

I think the general swtich to years it 2 years. Because they develop so much in two years. That iswhat I yhave heard at least.

I think I did it up to 2 years...almost! I got tired of trying to figure it out, counting on my fingers behind my back when people asked me got REALLY old!! lol So I just started saying, "She'll turn 2 in June." And now it's easy, "She's 3!"

I can't imagine trying to figure it out months-wise when she's almost 4!! Makes my brain hurt...

Yes after 2 there is no reason to do that

We switched at 2. I think people are used to hearing months up to 2 yrs. so they don't have to think much to realize 24 mos. is 2 yrs., but older than that just requires too much thinking.

I agree that 2 is a good age to switch over. My husband and I were joking about this the other night and computed our age in months, just for laughs.

Yeah, my husband and I joked about it too, he's 329 months and I'm 256 months old. It makes me feel like I got one foot in the grave!

Oh my, yeah, for us it changed. With our first, we did it till 2 years, second one till about 18 months. Our third child, we stopped at 12 months and started saying things like, "a little over a year" or " a year and a half" etc.

I think on average the more kids you have the earlier you switch (obviously the lady in question isn't average!)! I still occasionally use months with DD but mostly I use 1.5years.
