Al Jazeera has put up an opinion piece that I found rather interesting and informative, it's about the struggle for Africa. It covers both American and Chinese interest in Africa's resources, and how (unfortunately) China is making Africa a better deal than the United States is. It's kind of long, but I think it's worth a read.

The Chinese do seem to be interested in Africa, for trade and resources. Have a Chinese friend, whos wife was sent to work there by the government for 2 years.

Spent most of the past 6 years in (West) Africa...Ghana, Liberia,Togo, Benin. My opinion? The west has done far more for W Africa than China will ever do. W Africa is full of western aid workers, all working separately, trying to lift up the region. I have yet to see any sort of Chinese group (except for the occasional govt-sponsored group,replete with media teams) doing anything in W Africa. Strange that someone finds a completely different scenario than I experienced.
Oh, wait, al-Jazeera? Well, that explains it.
