• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have very bad teeth and my old dentist was a 'crack-pot' who just handed you pain pills in order to drag out treatment and make more money. Anyway--I have a decent dentist now and I've tried to quit taking the pain meds that the old dentist was giving me. I've noticed that I break out in sweats and I'm very achy and sore much of the time. I've tried quitting 'cold turkey', but the symptoms of withdrawal just seems to on and on. Does anyone know how long this will go on? I stopped taking the pills about a week ago, but I'm still plagued with pain and sweats. I had been taking them almost daily for about a month.
Any suggestions for making this easier? Should I have tapered myself off of them instead of just suddenly stopping?
Thanks for any advise!

Given that you only took the "medications" for about a month and have been clean for about a week, i would think that you should be through the worst of it and be slowly getting back to normal. Drinking lots of Cranberry Juice is a very good way of flushing out your system and speeding up the withdrawals. If you have serious problems for more than a day or two more, i would definitely check with a Doctor to see if maybe something else isn't going on.
I WOULD ALSO THINK THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO REPORT THE FOOL THAT PRESCRIBED ALL THAT JUNK FOR YOU!

MAY YOU BE BLESSED AND DELIVERED,

Thank you so much, ephraimanesti! I will buy some cranberry juice tomorrow--that juice is so good for you, so it wouldn't hurt to drink it often anyway. (I need to feel more healthy as my teeth are always making me feel sick--But, now that I have a good dentist, I feel that my problems with my teeth are almost behind me now.)

Yes--I am really sick of ending up with these doctors that just throw around pills and never mention the side-effects. When I sit in the waiting room, I see the pharmaceutical reps come in with all kinds of "perks" for doctors willing to prescribe different meds. (I've watched them walk in with large champagne bottles, gold watches, tickets for trips..ect.--it's ridiculous!) And it's all about the money they make by getting a doctor to prescribe 'their' meds! But, what can you expect when health care is run by the insurance companies now--and they dictate which doctors you'll see and what meds you'll use. (That's why I just started paying cash and seeing a good dentist instead of letting that bad one continue to work on my teeth.)

Take Care,

C J

There are a number of prescription drugs that have very serious issues with withdrawal, and Percocet is one of them.

People have died as a result of un-monitored withdrawal from prescription pain killers. You should probably speak to your GP about this.
I believe that statement because what I went through was just horrible. I would wake up drenched in sweat, all my muscles would ache--awful. And I kinda felt "itchy" too like something was crawling on my skin. I can see why people have a hard time kicking this stuff (or any other opiate). I'm doing a lot better now--even though it kind of flairs up a little bit here and there. I just let myself totally rest for a few days and didn't try to 'push' myself too much. Otherwise, I drank juice and took some Tylenol--although, it didn't help a whole lot--maybe just a little bit. I guess it was better than nothing. Someone had mentioned that I should of asked my doctor for a Catapres patch--but, I'm through the worst of it now so I decided not to. I'm somewhat annoyed that the dentist never mentioned the withdrawal issue at all...just kept loading me down with the junk! (And my teeth hurt so bad--I was pretty desperate and needed pain relief.) I'm so glad I'm almost out of this and I will ask a lot of questions the next time my doctor or dentist wants to put me on any kind of pain meds.
Thanks

MY DEAR SISTER,

i am so glad to hear that you are almost at the end of this ordeal! Prayers have been answered!
As you say, next time definitely ask a lot of questions. You might do well to invest a few bucks in a Drug Effects Reference Book such as "THE PILL BOOK" or something similiar (check amazon.com under "prescription drug effects"). These books give all the side effects, addiction potentials, etc., for all prescription and over-the-counter drugs. They are a wise investment!

PRAISE GOD FOR DELIVERING YOU FROM YOUR WITHDRAWALS,

what really does that mean????
Are you confused about the drugs? Or the withdrawl process?
With some prescription medication, when you stop taking it--your body is so 'used' to having it there, that it's 'shocked' when you stop taking it and has bad reactions. (It feels like when you have the flu really bad--but, the usual stuff you'd take with the flu doesn't always help with the symptoms.)
And the post about Oxy refers to the chemical make-up of the drug being similar to percocet, thus having the same withdrawl issues.
I hope that clear things up for you...
