It seems obvious to me that a lot of the areas of discussion are Health related. Whether they be smoking, caffiene, sugar (but no one brings this one up?), alcohol, drugs, meat, 'unclearn' meat, etc.

One thing, do people who call these things sinful call them sinful for other reasons than health?

Should we abstain from these things because they hurt the temple of our God (our bodies)?

Is it then sinful to be fat?

If this is not the case, shouldn't we put an emphasis on the areas of health that we have been ignoring. Like not eating fats and sugars, exercise, portion control.

Really, the very obese people in their church have damaged their bodies as much as smoking does (Well, smoking is a bit more unpleasent for all the surrounding people). Shouldn't we spend as much time teaching about the dangers of nicotine as teaching about fat and exercise?

GOOD health IS a total package!

mjona3 ask:
"One thing, do people who call these things sinful call them sinful for other reasons than health?" If you willfuly damage your body don't you think you will be held responsable for that?

"Should we abstain from these things because they hurt the temple of our God (our bodies)?" That alone should be reason enough, but if its not, just ask any diabetic, or obese person, if they wish they had taken better care of their body.

"Is it then sinful to be fat?" Since by and large a person's weight is controlable, what do you think?

"If this is not the case, shouldn't we put an emphasis on the areas of health that we have been ignoring. Like not eating fats and sugars, exercise, portion control." WITHOUT QUESTION!!!

"Really, the very obese people in their church have damaged their bodies as much as smoking does (Well, smoking is a bit more unpleasent for all the surrounding people). Secondhand smoke is more dangerous and deadlier for the very young, and those with compromised immune systems than the original smoke is for the smoker. Shouldn't we spend as much time teaching about the dangers of nicotine as teaching about fat and exercise?" Proper nutrition and physical fitness are the the very first subjects that must be taught, and learned, for overall health and wellbeing.

SDAs have much knowledge about health. However that knowledge is worthless if you don't have the wisdom and common sense to apply that knowledge!

By the way the two most used adictive druges in the U.S. today are caffeine and nicotine

DON'T DIG YOUR GRAVE WITH YOUR TEETH!!!

Respectfully, your brother in Christ,
Doc

I am not going to say that being fat/obese is sinfull or not. But I will say that we as humans function much better if we are closer to our ideal body weight that above or even below.

Some peoples body structure is heavy while others is light.

It is much easier for some to obtain an ideal body weight while others struggle.

Then the older one gets the lighter they should aim to be.

As a Church we are not very good at getting our over weight members to consider shedding some excess. It is not just a Church thing but a community problem as well.

My mom has a thyroid problem which makes her be a little overweight. She is vegan and a very strict SDA (me not so much). So I don't see her being overweight as a sin. I do however see gluttony as a sin. Yes, our bodies are our temples and we have to do our best to take care of them. I think we probably all struggle w/this one in one aspect or another.

Hi Micbmac,

I hope you noticed that I said in my post on this topic that I used the phrase "by and large" most people can control their weight. That takes into account that there are some who can't control their weight due to other medical conditions. However, that being said, the vast majority of those who are overweight can control their weight. It may require some lifestyle changes as well as dietary changes.
You Said:
"My mom has a thyroid problem which makes her be a little overweight. She is vegan and a very strict SDA (me not so much). So I don't see her being overweight as a sin. I do however see gluttony as a sin. Yes, our bodies are our temples and we have to do our best to take care of them. I think we probably all struggle w/this one in one aspect or another."
Don't get caught up in all the squable over whether something is a sin or not. When that happens both sides are trying to find a leglstic justificaton for their point of view. That of course makes both sides wrong. That type of behavior is usually counter productive and is a waste of time. What IS important is that God wants eveyone of His children to have the highest quality of life possible.

Tell your mother that there may be help available that she hasn't been made aware of. Tell her to discuss it with her primary health care provider.

Respectfully, your friend and brothr in Christ,
Doc

The church we are visiting has a cooking class. haven't gone yet, trying to persuade my son.

You will find some incredible cooks in the SDA church. I would strongly encourage you to attend this class.

After all, it's a good way to make friends; and you will also discover new recipes that not only taste great, but are healthy too:thumbsup:

I was brought up on fare such as liver dumpling soup, but at about age 20, i started reading recipes and decided to try vegetables that didn't come from a can! and millet and lentils, and soy milk (we don't drink milk).
This church has only 30 people, but I have Got to get that 'meat'loaf recipe.

I think we should teach about the dangers of sugar, overeating, unhealthy foods, etc... The more we take care of our bodies, the more we are able to understand spiritual things.

I use to be a big overeater. This is because when I was a kid and would overeat, people would just laugh and say "don't worry he's just a growing boy." Maybe that was true then, but it made me develop bad habits. Just overeating itself gave me many problems, and I never thought overeating applied to me (because of the growing boy mentality stuck even after teenage years.)

The better we take care of ourselves the more we can do for God.

That brought something to mind; do you guys fast?

I do. I don't do it often, but when there is something really major going on in my life, I fast in prayer.

On one occasion, everyone on my husband's side of the family (and me) fasted for three days in prayer and I can honestly say I don't think I've ever felt closer to God.

Talk about denying self and being completely humbled before the Lord!
