Wow, I can't believe I've been away for almost two months! My self imposed hiatus was based on the fact that this forum was turning into a giant sandbox filled with petty people and petty complaints.
It was getting pretty sick frankly, so I decided to hang it up for a while. I am not back permanently however because I wanted to make this special post regarding the new Adventist Forum, Advent Talk which I understand is Daryl Fawcett's site.
I signed up for Advent Talk sometime back in March, but never posted anything until very recently, shortly after I received an e-mail notifying me about a new thread that was discussing discipline and whether it should be done in public or privately.
Intrigued I decided to stop by.
I saw several posts regarding the sabbath and some excellent articles posted by various members. Lots of cool stuff & some not so cool stuff, especially the tet-a-te regarding 3ABN and the troubles over there....not the way Adventist should behave in my opinion. But that's for another day.
Then I saw a post regarding the things we should be "grateful for" which seemed interesting. What the post was about was an article attributed to comedian Jay Leno titled "Jay Leno Hits the Nail on the Head."
Now, the OP insists that he didn't mean for the post to be of a political nature. Sure I can buy that. But the OP never made his intentions known in his first post. However, whether he had or hadn't would not have changed the fact that he posted "political" speech that not everyone (obviously me!) would agree with. On a public forum you can't post things that someone might disagree with and expect it not to be discussed. That would be absolutely naive.
Well, if you read the article, which was actually written by Craig R. Smith, by clicking on the above link I think you'll see my objections to the post and content in general. While the article lists many valid points of things we should be grateful for the bottom line is that it is "political" speech to which I posted a line by line rebuttal. Basically it's a bang the war drum and bang the "support the President" drum article that I find highly objectionable. In fact, when you think about it, it's really a stupid article from the stand point that the writer's very questions are answered by the result of the poll he quotes. Read the article, you'll see what I mean.
After much wrangling and back and forth and even the insistence by one moderator at Advent Talk that it wasn't "political" speech until I made it so that thread was closed. I was encouraged to take my complaint regarding the unprofessional and poor moderating to another thread titled "forum concerns."
I also complained to the head moderator regarding the veiled use of derogatory and insulting language when another poster took the word "assume" that I used in a post and basically called me an "azz." Nothing was done about that at all. Here at CF, that kinda stuff would not fly. At Advent Talk I supposed that type of stuff is encouraged.
From there, I started a thread there to discuss this poor behavior and extremely unprofessional moderating and that thread quickly devolved into another thread discussing what is, and isn't "political" speech. It too was closed.
Finally, this morning I started another thread that was intended to discuss the actual "political" speech contained in Craig R. Smith's original column. Now just so you are aware as to where I'm coming from this original column was first published at World Net Daily, a web site that deals in, you guessed it, "politics!"

And guess what, that post was closed, I was banned! (permanently or temporarily I do not know; permanently I sure after this post, but I don't care frankly).
Now, I could see if there was name calling, or a clear violation of the posted rules that would lead to a ban. There was none. No rules violated no derogatory or insulting language used by me, only other's.
To top it off I recieved this e-mail today: "All topics of a political nature are now temporarily banned at Advent Talk."
Say what? I'm the one that points out the "political" nature of the content of a post, leading to a temporary ban on "political" threads and I'm the one who gets banned? How's that work?
Anyway, I'm not upset about any on this, just absolutely fascinated that there could be a forum out there in etherland that has such poor moderating and policing of it's threads and moderators.
Daryl, do me a huge favor. Please, objectionably take a good look at the entire situation over there at Advent Talk. If you have an objection to free speech don't ban it, police it better, and try to have moderators that know what "political" speech is.
As I said over there many times in those various threads that were closed, if your are going to post something that is of a political nature, no matter what your intentions may be, you can't expect someone not to challenged the "political" nature of what you posted.
