Kookaburra
searching for The Hidden Country
Anyone watching would have seen little of the chase, only four indistinct figures rushing into the dusk. Liam ran easily, and he sped up a little when he heard the horn ahead of him. Apparantly Ellis was in wonderful shape, and in a torturous sprint was drawing away from the pursuing. Liam kicked open the door, darted through the hut and vaulted out of the window without touching the frame, in and out within two seconds. In a swift blur that still could not reach Ellis, he passed Hank and grabbed a leaf from a treebranch, folding it deftly and putting it to his lips. A high-pitched whistle cut the air, and Liam threw the leaf away. Within seconds, the heavy thunder of his stallion's hooves was heard, and he swung up into the saddle, overtaking Ellis at last a minute later, and knocking him to the ground with a staff-thrust.
Jumping off, he faced the wounded Ellis, eyes bitter. Seconds later, Ryaren entered the clearing, followed by Hank's crashing through the undergrowth.
Ellis pulled himself to his knees. "I see I'm outnumbered," he hissed.
"I do not know," Liam returned, eyes hard. "But you have taken something not rightfully yours."
"Bah!" Ellis spat, face an unemotional mask. "I have friends."
"You may not live to see them, if you continue the fight." There was a faint glow in the staff-stone.
"You would kill a wounded man?" Ellis asked incredulously.
"I wouldn't need to. If you don't give them what they want, you'll die just the same as if you were left in the wilderness with no weapons and a wounded leg."
Ellis considered, sly eyes shifting around the trees. He was stalling. Liam stood back. "Get to your feet."
"What?"
"Give the lady here the Kenderila or you are coming with us."
"Over my dead body!"
"Is that the way you want it? Do you want to die? I do not want to harm anyone more than you want to die."
