  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Were Adam and Eve able to talk to each other? Yes
What language did they use? Don't know. Some scholars think that every human language derived from one common language.
What was their range of vocabulary? As wide as necessary.
Did they have words for things they didn't know about? How could they? Adam was smart enough to name all the animals. Try creating names for a 100 objects. I have trouble thinking up usernames for website logins

God could speak to both of them and be understood (Gen 1:28-29). That being the case, it's a fair assumption they could talk to each other.

We don't know what language they spoke. Centuries after they lived, there was a flood that killed everybody but one family. After that, civilization grew back, but then the languages were confused and divided in Genesis 11. There isn't any way to trace language development beyond that.

They were likely the most intelligent people in history.
Their children invented all musical instruments and metallurgy.

You say they didn't have words for things they didn't know about.
Death did not exist, so they didn't have a word related to it.
So how would they possibly understand a threat that eating from a tree would result in their death?
They did have a word for it. God declared it to them. Satan knew the word too. No one knows how long it was from the time that Adam was instructed and Eve was tempted. Adam and Eve knew enough speech for Eve to blame the devil and Adam to blame God. Adam was far more intelligent than modern man. He knew exactly what he was doing when he rebelled against God.

Best guess: before Eve's first ovulation cycle.

God told them to "be fruitful and multiply" [Genesis 1:28], but she didn't conceive until after The Fall.

Were Adam and Eve able to talk to each other?
Clearly, but did they
What language did they use?
Ancient King James English, Stone Age dialect (just like the Apostle Paul spoke Early King James English, Iron Age dialect).
What was their range of vocabulary
They could grunt their ancient "Thee's, Thou's, and Verily's" with the best of them. And they even used words with more than three syllables, if necessary, like antidisestablishmentarianism, for instance.
Did they have words for things they didn't know about?
Do you mean like "Space Shuttle" or "XBOX"? Probably not, but who knows?

Well he named her Eve. (She was the first person to have a proper name. All he had was a description, "earthen [red clay].")

And his marriage declaration,

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.” Genesis 2:23 NKJV

(So, he had some medical understanding, too, since he knew what "bones" were.)

As was mentioned, we only know what the bible says, so I always assumed Adam and Eve were created to work right out of the box, plug and play. IOW, they didn't have to learn language and certain skills like a child does. But we do know they had to learn wrong from right.

Were Adam and Eve able to talk to each other?
Eve talked with the serpent.

They could talk.

What language did they use?
I don't know. We do know there was one language on earth until the Tower of Babel, right?

Possibly, Hebrew made it through it all. Adam and Eve eventually gave rise to Jesus. So, may be Hebrew was a common link throughout the genealogy to Jesus.

What was their range of vocabulary?
I would say > at first, Adam and Eve were perfectly created beings, without sin. So, their capabilities were not being spoiled by sin. So, their range or potential was what we may not have experienced.

From them have come humans able to go to the moon and do brain separations of Siamese twins. So, even after sin has come into humans, still humans have the various abilities that we do now see. So, before their fall . . . they were even more, in who knows what abilities and who knows what vocabulary potential. Even if they had a great range, I would say their potential was for much more. But sin degraded them, including to being able to have shame about what is not a rightful cause for shame > they got very mixed and messed up.

I'd like to mention > since I have trusted in Jesus, I would say I have become much more creative, and this mainly working in loving any and all people. I just used people; now I can get close to women and not only to try to use them. I have become more and more easily free of how worry and anger used to degrade me and keep me from loving. I can make much more loving and creative use of abilities I have had, and of my education; because love creates.

Love is a language, by the way, isn't it?

Even though they were perfect as creatures, they were not perfect in God's love which makes us able to say no to wrong stuff.

Their range of love was very limited, then. Range of vocabulary and linguistic ability is very limited, compared with ability to relate and communicate with God and people.

Did they have words for things they didn't know about?
I think we could ask if they knew the word "love" and all this can mean.

You're probably right Sabertooth, because after several depressingly unsuccessful attempts at finding a suitable help meet from among the barnyard animals, birds and field critters, Adam woke up one morning, saw Eve walking towards him for the very first time (with the wings of the dawn in the Garden), and he immediately recited the 'word' from Genesis 2:23 that expressed all that he was feeling in that moment (a word that, in fact, requires many words to adequately express in our modern dialect) ... "YOWZA" :)).

Actually, it was that afternoon... (Eve was created on Day 6, too...

That means Adam named all of the [land?] animals in one day, making animal taxonomy the world's oldest profession!

I think the Adam and Eve tale is a less than credible myth which doesn't do the Biblical god character any favours at all.

Please look up the definition of taxonomy.
If Adam had a word for the moon, did he invent cosmology?
