  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it a sin to watch action films? One of my favorite action stars is Sly Stallone, so I was wondering if watching The Expendables is sinful despite the movie actually having a plot.

You mean I can't watch Die Hard anymore since becoming a Christian? Or Aliens? Or The Terminator?

Please remember action films are truly some of the silliest films around in the sense they are so way over-the-top. Ultimately you are only seeing the final product of sound stages, stunt doubles, spfx, pyrotechnics, and snazzy editing

It is what is in your heart that counts!

One of my top twenty films of all time is Goodfellas, a lot profanities and violence abounds, visceral level of violence. However it does not glamourize the gangster life, portrays it as it is, these scum bags days are numbered. So I overlook the profanities and the violence as a good dose of reality. Carthecism. And I personally believe it is one of the greatest gangster films ever made.

I was wondering about action films. Lately I have been wondering if a film or tv show glorifies God. I conclude that based on this question, I might as well turn the tv off. Anyways, thanks.

I have the same conflicts until I realise there is a great deal of hypocrisy and hair splitting concerning profanity and violence in television and film.

In essence, what is the acceptable level for all Christians? What is the unacceptable level for all Christians?

Do you see the hairsplitting hypocrisy of it all? But that does not mean Christians should not exercise a bit of taste. But really think about it really...

I have and I also wonder about the hypocrisy regarding sex and violence. There was sex and violence in the Bible. Where does one draw the line? Does it have too much cursing? Is it too violent to the point where it glorifies it? Is it demeaning to godly values? I have to question everything as I believe all Christians do. Does the sex or violence have more to do with the actual plot in terms of right and wrong, like in the case of David, who committed adultery? Or is it gratuitous?

I think the graphic nature of some films push them past what would be acceptable for many people, let alone Christians. It is sometimes hard to judge a film solely on the ratings. I have seen R rated films that were tamer than most PG-13 movies and some PG-13 movies that I thought should have been R. That being said, I think you have to be honest about the content of the movie and decide whether you would watch it with Jesus sitting next to you.

My view is if what you watch is affecting your life then you need to stop it because its changing you. Or if your being convicted of it then you need to stop. For example I used to watch any kind of R rated movie. But I found myself over the years day dreaming of being a hero killing guys violently, swearing...etc. The movies were changing me, even to the point of swearing in real life. Granted it didn't help my best friend who was an atheist swore all the time.

I personally don't believe it's a sin to watch action movies.

For one, it's all stunts, pyrotechnics, stunt doubles, wire work, quibs (which are small controlled explosives for say flipping a car), etc. It's all completely fake and you know the main hero is going to come out of an otherwise impossible situation. It's silly, over the top, but in the end, it doesn't matter.

Also, think of some of the stories in the Bible. Some have completely brutal violence that would be rated 'R' if filmed exactly how the Bible portrays it, and no one under 18 could see it, yet we see little kids, like 8 yrs old, reading the Bible. How does that make sense?

If watching anything is a sin just because it has violence, or gore, or sex..then it would be (kind of) hypocritical to say reading the Bible is ok. I would also say that with Game of Thrones. I bet making an HBO-like production of The Bible would make it unsuitable for kids as well.

Well, when speaking of the OT, when it says God is arriving upon the clouds, literally means that a nation is receiving visitation and judgment, look at things that happened to the rulers of Israel and Samaria when the Assyrians conquered them. There is an excellent book titled Ancient Iraq by Georges Roux, I've heard it is a bit dated now but I was riveted by this book. And it spoke of heinous acts the Assyrians would do to the rulers of nations they conquered and bible graphically records it. There is a lot sex and violence in the good book. No doubt and God does and has used nations to judge nations.... need I say more? But not until that nation reaches the fullness of its sin.

With an action movie, you know it is all just professional actors and they all live at the end of the day. But like someone said if you feel the pull of the Holy Spirit and what you are watching doesnt feel healthy in your convictions, maybe its time to spend time with God and His word, then obey these convictions.

Personally, I feel most action movies are ludicrous. And I love to watch old 70s & 80s wuxia aka kung fu theatre streams on YouTube. And I do want to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier in the theatre.
