Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

:p

The Catholic's problem has always been their legalism and power hunger gets in the way of more important things. OOO Let's decide that I'm right so I can tell you you're wrong.

Well, maybe if they hadn't tried keeping Christ from the people, and giving their version of the word. There wouldn't be so many other denominations.

If they hadn't conned the people into paying for bricks under the guise of earning salvation, so they could build nice big pretty churches, maybe there wouldn't be so many other denominations.

Maybe if they hadn't decided it would be a good idea to worship Earthly souls instead of God to answer their calls, there wouldn't be so many other denominations. Heck, not saying I would agree or disagree, but I could at least understand praying to Angels, those at least are heavenly beings. But Saints? Regular people like you or I? Nah.

Basically if they had stuck to scripture instead of making up any and everything they wanted....there wouldn't be so many other denominations. There most certainly wouldn't be Lutherans as there would have been nothing to reform had the RCC stuck to scripture.

I am disgusted by this. I was always kind of proud to be identified as a catholic lite or diet catholic so to speak, but NOT now. I always knew they had doctrine that was unbiblical, but give me a break. Clearly followers of Jesus Christ are not good enough for Rome. I'm disgusted. I feel like throwing my prayer beads away and not using the sign of the cross ever again. Wow, terrible.

One point of trivia. The Orthodox thoroughly condemned the Catholics for changing the laying on of hands to require Bishops. They said if a priest couldn't lay on hands he couldn't chrismate or baptise either and that was clearly not right.

You can read it in Saint Photius' Encyclical
that is also the authority that lays out the opposition to the filoque clause. Unfortunately it reads to me like the Orthodox image of God is not like a triangle with each person have a relation to the others, but more like a heirarchy with God the Father at the top and Jesus begotten and the Spirit proceeding and nothing between the Spirit and Jesus.

I hate romanism. I tried giving it a chance as just another denomination but there is no way. I HATE IT. I hope Benedict goes directly to hell when he dies and all others who think that rome is the only way. HATE IT SO MUCH

We don't have to like the Pope or the papacy, but let's not sink to a level like that. I'd rather pray that the man learns the truth before he dies.

*Sigh* I thought the majority of people didn't accept this anymore. I know Protestants who think Catholics are not Christians and I know Catholics that think Protestants are not Christians. I just hope that this is disputed not only by the Protestants, but also by the Catholics as well. This is one of the most ridiculous ideas I have ever heard. Apostolic succession is not required for anything at all.

I don't think this Pope is too worried about making people happy. He is a detail guy after all that's why he was the enforcer of doctrinal purity.

I don't really mind his statement, it just lays out to all those people who think they can cooperate with Rome that it is really like trying to cooperate with the Borg. The only thing that can happen is that you get assimilated.

His statement might sound like a change to people but it's been official position for a long time. It's just that his immediate predecessor was not so concerned about purity and did a lot more reaching out.

It will be interesting to see just how far he rolls back Vatican II toward Trent. I'm thinking he'd like to go all the way, but might not. But you can bet anyone that is leading a Catholic seminary that is wanting to curry the Pope's favor (just assume 100%, you'd be close enough) is dusting off the books to teach the Latin Mass all over again.

This keeps up and Mel Gibson will be able to return to the fold. His sect is basically locked into pre-Vatican II Catholicism.

That's gotta be it. The Pope wants Mel Gibson on his team again.

As a fan of Star Trek, I just thought that was hilarious....and certainly true. I have yet to talk with a devout roman Catholic who would recognize my salvation as resting on my belief that Jesus died for my sins. It certainly gets old being told how much of a Christian that I am *not*, and how I do not have salvation. It's too bad that we can't all play nice together. Our time is too short, and the number of people needing the gospel message is so large....

It is so true.
Scripture says clearly, Jesus says clearly,
a lot of people, most all, (also in church!) are deceived in the end times.

It is written that the whole world is deceived
and Jesus said that multitudes (i.e. not just a few million)
"in church" ! are rejected on judgment day becaue they weren't saved! Now, that's a shocker to most people when they first read it.
On second and third reading too! But, can Scriptue be changed ?

I know a lot of non-denoms and Baptists who believe the same thing. *shakes her head* While I certainly disagree with some of their major doctrines, I firmly believe that God's grace can reach people even if they hold to incorrect, heterodox doctrines.
