Just asking as to when Priest's can forgive SIN's with a verse ?

I do know of a verse in John 20 :23 , but do not see how that can be applicable for today as it was ONLY for Israel.

dan p
The forgiveness doesn't come from the priest. It comes from God. The priest is just acting in persona Christi- in the person of Christ.

I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

In this verse, John doesn't say "confess your sins to me and I will absolve you of your sins. He states "He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us..."

Going by your reasoning John could then absolve himself but we see that he includes himself in this as well as needing to be forgiven and cleansed.

Also, you didn't answer my other question. Since you posted prayers I was curious if Catholics such as yourself go to the Father himself in prayer outside of church? Or is your prayer to him tied to specfically the church masses?
#1. No one can absolve themself.
#2. To answer your second question. Yes we pray to the Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The entire Mass is a prayer to the Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the scriptures there are stories about how Jesus interacted with people who had sinned. One is the story of the woman caught in adultery. There are others too. So, what has this to do with Absolution you may wonder?
John 8:11 DRB Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.
Well, it is the last part of the interaction that is the absolution, as a Catholic would understand the passage, Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.

John 8:10-11 DRB Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? (11) Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.

No one accused her, no one condemned her, Jesus did not condemn her, and her 'penance'? what was it, just "Go and sin no more".

A Catholic act of contrition:
Lord Jesus, you opened the eyes of the blind, healed the sick, forgave the sinful woman, and after Peter's denial confirmed him in your love.
Listen to my prayer: forgive all my sins, renew your love in my heart, help me to live in perfect unity with my fellow Christians that I may proclaim your saving power to all the world.

A short prayer:
Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

The priest's prayer of absolution:
God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
I have yet to find a Greek word for ABSOLUTION unless you know a verse that I missed , and need a verse that a priest under the Law of Moses to send the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins .

Under the Law of Moses all Jews had to Covered by ATONEMENT and was ADAM and Eve , Gen 3:21 .

In the BODY of Christ there are NO PRIEST and the A[POSTLE Paul never mentioned Priests .

and in 1 John 5:18 says , We know that whosoever is BORN of God sinneth NOT // MU and cannot sin because the Greek word NOT // is a DISJUNCATIVE PARTICLE NEGATIVE and means CANNOT SINNNNNNNNNNNNN ever !!

I beg you, O Lord, that you may absolve me from the chains of this reproach, or at least take me away from the earth.

Jesus gave the apostles and their successors authority to absolve people form their sins (John 20:21-23, Matthew 18:18)
And John 20:22 Jesus BREATHED ON THEM , and saith unto them , Receive ye the HOLY SPIRIT >

And I have yet to see successors authority to ABSOLVE SINS ?

If you believe that , then you must have a verse as PROOF , so quote me that verse , that I can study it , PLEASE ?

And How did those disciples , ( in verse 19 ) REMITT SINS ??

John 20:23 is a verse that only Catholics will take it as directed to us today.

For the rest, they either
  1. ignore the verse and pretend its over-ridden by other scripture passages, or
  2. regard that verse as a specific instruction for the 12 apostles.

It is an irony that those who speak of their commitment to sola scriptura are so ready to ignore verses that support Catholic views.

How would you respond if there is a group that believes we must build an ark now, because of Genesis 6:14?

Would it be ironic if they use your statement on you as well?

I would wish them good luck; and then watch as they built their ark. And then I'd probably have a good laugh as they tried to load two of every kind and seven of every clean kind into the ark.

So likewise, non-Catholics are thinking the same when you think John 20:23 is directed to you.

They wish you good luck and have a good laugh at you as well ;)

In my previous post, I said I would laugh as they attempted to load two of every unclean kind of animal and seven of every clean kind of animal into the ark. I would be laughing at their attempts, not really at them. The attempts would probably be very humorous. Human beings are just not built for gathering large numbers of animals and herding them into a little wooden boat.

Catholics do not think of John 20:23 as applying to them each individually. We think of the verses as applying to those who are priests and bishops among us. We are of the opinion that the promise that was made by Jesus regarding the forgiveness of sins, was made not just for the one generation that included the Apostles, but for all generations, until he comes again. Do you think it only applied to the apostles in their generation and that no generation since has participated in that gift?

I do, it was a specific instruction to the 12, much like the perennial favorite Matthew 28:18-20.

Well so much for confession and forgiveness I have to note that down and let my local priest know he's out of a job.
