• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

HI RC,
Only a Dr. can truly diagnose OCD but here are a few things that are typical of OCD thinking.

You say you struggle with doubts about assurance of salvation.
If you have OCD, which by the way is often referred to as "the doubting disease", these thoughts will haunt your every waking minute.
In a person who doesn't have OCD and who is also a Chrisitian the occasional thought might creep into their mind that they might not really be saved. This is a common thing. But they will be able to just shake it off and get on with life.
But for the person with OCD such a thought becomes an obsession. If you are a person with the type of OCD called pure "O". You will ruminate endlessly about that thought. You will spend hours and hours trying to reassure yourself that you are saved. Things in the Bible will jump out at you which will make you wonder all the more if you are really saved. Statements made by Pastors toward the unsaved will seem to apply to you. As you fight these thoughts extreme anxiety will begin to take over your life. The thought or thoughts on the same theme will haunt you. When you wake up they will greet you first thing in the morning. As you go deeper into this cycle of having the thoughts, which are called spikes, then fighting them, debating with them, looking for reassurance about them, etc. the thoughts become more firmly imbedded into your brain. Then the very fact that you can't get rid of the thoughts convinces you that the thoughts must really be true. Then the anxiety becomes even more overwhelming, then you begin to fight it all the more which only seems to make it all the more believable and valid when it is actually not valid at all. But you won't be able to shake the fear and anxiety that it causes so you end up obsessing endlessly. It's a vicious cycle and very hard to break without the proper understanding of the biology of why OCD occurs and without the proper therapy and often medication which enables the sufferer to do the therapy which is called exposure/response.
I hope I've been able to shed a little light on what living with religious OCD can be like. It's not a complete description by any means because many sufferers also have compulsions that they do to try and undo the thoughts, but maybe it will give you a clue as to whether or not OCD applies to your patterns of thought.
I have the pure "O" type of OCD with obsessional thoughts without compulsions.
Blessings to you,
Mitzi
