My position on this ethical issue has been one that has developed over time. For the longest time I have battled with what I believe, what morals I posses, what my family tells me to believe, and what I read about in society. I feel as if Im partial to some stances, and a firm believer in others. To help convey my position the best, I will simply answer each of the main ethical issues concerned with abortion as I stated above. First, are fetuses worthy of legal protection? Thats a tough question to answer unless I decided when I believe life begins. I think I believe that life begins when the fetus is reaching close to full development in the womb. Meaning, I believe that if a fetus were to be born premature, it could only survive if it had developed all of the proper organs and such to live. Once a fetus has developed all these essential organs whereas it can survive and live apart from its host, then that is when life begins. So then technically, with that being said, I suppose I also believe by default that a fetus is NOT considered to be a person within its first trimester of conception. Since abortion mainly takes place within the first trimester of conception, by default, I believe that abortion is still ethical. Does a fetus gain rights as it gets closer to birth? Im not necessarily sure if a fetus should have rights. When I think of human rights, I think of individuals who exist in society, who are active in society, and who use resources that society has to offer. A fetus is not yet a being that is born, thinks, and has a place in society. A fetus is different than a baby that is born. Once human life begins when the child is born, THEN the rights shall be given.
