We have a story here that the Indians kidnapped two little white girls. Years later they were returned to their family. Only there were two girls and they had grown so much that they did not recognize who was who. Only one of the girls remembered a song that her mother sang for her when she was very young. So that was how they identified them. Not all the so called slaves wanted their so called freedom. They became to assimilated into the Indian culture. They did not really belong any where. Perhaps today they would call this the Stockholm syndrome. The known can be less scary then the unknown.
