Suppose your life had begun this way: You wake up suddenly on a strange but beautiful planet, in the middle of a bountiful garden. After coming to your senses you start walking around, and that is when you meet Abe. Abe seems to be very smart. He tells you that he made everything here, and he will let you stay here if you follow one rule: Don't eat the purple apples. If you eat purple apples you will get sick and die. Then Abe leaves. OK, no problem, there are plenty of other things to eat here. You start eating the blue bananas. But then you meet Benny, who also seems to be very smart. Benny tells you Abe is not telling you the truth. Benny tells you if you eat purple apples you won't die like Abe says, but you will become as smart as Abe and Benny.

What do you do? Who do you believe, Abe or Benny?

It is a no-brainer that I would start with finding out who Abe is.

And how would you find you who is telling the truth?

I need to know more about everything. The best way is to start from Abe.
Until I find it out, I would try to do what Abe said. Not I trust Abe, but I seems to be OK thus far.

Stop playing the game.
Adam KNOWS God very very very well. That is the point.

I'd ask Benny how long he's been eating purple apples.

Then I would have to observe Benny eating purple apples and not get sick.

In the meantime, I would report my encounter to Abe, to see what he says about it.

I don't know what I'd do. But Eve was tricked by Benny.

Interestingly, while Eve was the first to eat the fruit it's Adam who gets the blame in the New Testament. Ignorance, or naiveté, can be mitigating circumstances.

I say go after the tale itself. Let’s talk about where the writer/s of the tale of Adam and Eve got their tale from.
They took it from older Sumerian and Akkadian tales.
I say forget about picking ‘God’ or the ‘serpent,’ let’s talk about how the tale is not original to the Hebrew Bible.
Maybe I’ll start a new thread.

Ok, but what reason would you have to trust Abe over Benny?

You say Adam knew God very, very well. How is it that he knew God well enough to know who was telling him the truth? From what I see in Genesis, two creatures talk to Adam and Eve, but Adam and Eve really had nothing to go on to determine who was telling them the truth.

GREAT POST, doubtingmerle, great post.
I'd ask Benny how long he's been eating purple apples.
Benny would lie to you that he has been eating them for a long time every day.
Then I would have to observe Benny eating purple apples and not get sick.
Benny is very tricky, tricky. He is spirit who can make some magic tricks, illusions. It is all about deception when you meet with Benny.
In the meantime, I would report my encounter to Abe, to see what he says about it.
good point. But Abe didn't warn Adam and Eve about Benny. I wonder why?

Actually, Abe didn't say: you will stay here if you follow one rule. BTW, there were two rules, not one. Abe also didn't say that eating fruit will make Adam and Eve sick.

God teaches Adam many many things, more than anyone ever received in earthly education. Adam is a super super Ph.D. (The Bible says so)

To bad Adam had no idea that many things God was teaching him are good. Too bad Adam couldn't understand that break any God's law is sin(evil).
Too bad Adam and Eve didn't know what lie(evil) is.

Not that bad.
We are worse. Many many of us do not know those things.
