  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Although I feel really odd about your thoughts behind this question, I will give an answer...lol

I think that we have a spirit when we become a Christian. If your not saved (meaning a Christian) you are spiritually dead. When you get saved, you are reborn of the spirit and thus spiritually alive. So, no we do not have a spirit before we are saved.
Although we may be 'spiritually dead' before we become a Christian, that does not mean that we do not have a spirit. That means that our spirit is not connected to God. The spirit is the element in man which gives him the ability to have an intimate relationship with God. The Spirit that we receive when we become a Christian is the Holy Spirit. There is a difference between our own personal spirit and the Holy Spirit.

If it is true that you don't have a spirit unless you are a Christian... Why does Genesis speak of Pharaoh's spirit?

Genesis 41
7 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.
8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

Why are we told to try the spirits if someone who is not a Christian doesn't have a spirit anyway?

I John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Spirit and soul are at times interchangable in the Bible, I think this could be referring to Pharoah's soul, but since I am not God I don't really know.

Why would we try spirits if we already have them, you don't test drive something you already have.

As for 1 John 4:1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether theyare of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."

"Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits" means we shouldn't believe everything we hear just because someone says it is a message inspired by God. There are many ways to test teachers to see if their message is truly from God. One is to check their words with what God says in the Bible. Other tests include their commitment to the body of believers (2:19), their life-style (3:23-24), and the fruit of their ministry (4:6). But the most important test of all, says John, is what they believe about Christ. Do they teach that Jesus is fully God and fully man? Our world is filled with voices claiming to speak for God. Give them these tests to see if they are indeed speaking God's truth.

Especially look at 1 John 3:24 "And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us." - The mutual relationship, "dwelling in him," is a vital relationship that shows itself in Christians who keep these three essential commands: (1) believe in Chirst, (2) love the brothers and sisters, and (3) live morally upright. The Spirit's presence is not only spiritual and mystical, but it is also practical. Our conduct verifies his presence.

I think sometimes the definition of spirit and soul are interchanged and spirit also stands for other things in the Bible besides the spirit that causes us to have a relationship with God. There are evil spirits and unclean spirits, but these spirits are not the same type of spirit that a Christian gets when they are saved. When a Christian is saved, they are born of the spirit - I interpret this to mean this is when they get their spirit that allows them to fellowship with God. I am not saying that there are not other types of spirits because I believe there are, but not everyone has this Christian spirit.

I don't know. I'm not sure if I'm not being clear. We just disagree or you are just in a confrontational/debating mood, but I knew we were headed in this direction as I already mentioned above about not knowing your thoughts behind the question...lol, oh well - differences make people interesting. Life would be boring if we all thought the same way. And as my philosophy class has said, criticisms of your arguments or beliefs cause you to relook at them and realize why you have them and it makes you a stronger person with stronger convictions (unless the criticism causes you to change your mind...lol)

This right here clears a lot up. I think we get a soul when we are conceived. I do not think we get a spirit when we are conceived.

We receive both a soul and a spirit when we are conceived. Adam had a soul in the beginning, but he didn't have a spirit... He wasn't alive. Your spirit is what makes you living.

See I think here, maybe we do agree, our definitions just don't match up. What I consider a persons life force is their soul. I think they get a spirit that allows them to fellowship with God when they become a Christian. As for unborn babies, and children, they are innocent and if something happens to them they automatically go to heaven because they haven't reached the age of accountability.

Why not? Is it normally cold, hot, cool, or warm in there? What are the rooms like? Is there a restroom near the lobby?
I've only had 2 classes in there, and yes there is a bathroom near the lobby. It was cold in both classes. I just think the building feels funny. If that makes any sense.

Yes; there is one right beside it and then another parking lot on the other side of 5th avenue. You can only park at the one beside it for like 2 hrs at a time I think. I don't know if that applies to Friday evenings though. What time is the test?

The test is Saturday morning. So would there be a time limit then? Where is the other parking lot at?
There are parking lots all around the campus. If you miss them, you are blind.... They are huge! You don't need a parking permit on Saturday; so, I guess you can park anywhere.

Maybe I am just visually challenged...lol, especially when I am very nervous about taking a test that will have much to do with my future (unless my long lost uncle leaves me his fortune and I don't have to go to law school...lol)
