Although we may be 'spiritually dead' before we become a Christian, that does not mean that we do not have a spirit. That means that our spirit is not connected to God. The spirit is the element in man which gives him the ability to have an intimate relationship with God. The Spirit that we receive when we become a Christian is the Holy Spirit. There is a difference between our own personal spirit and the Holy Spirit.Although I feel really odd about your thoughts behind this question, I will give an answer...lol
I think that we have a spirit when we become a Christian. If your not saved (meaning a Christian) you are spiritually dead. When you get saved, you are reborn of the spirit and thus spiritually alive. So, no we do not have a spirit before we are saved.
If it is true that you don't have a spirit unless you are a Christian... Why does Genesis speak of Pharaoh's spirit?
Genesis 41
7 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.
8 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.
Why are we told to try the spirits if someone who is not a Christian doesn't have a spirit anyway?
I John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
