Come on, I know there has to be at least a few George R R Martin fans out there.
This series is the best ever. If he finishes it before he kicks the bucket, this series will kick LOTRs butt. Definately my deserted island books.

That would be the one. I would have to agree that it is by far the best fantasy series ever written. Martin is a brilliant author, the best I have ever read when it comes to fully bringing a world to life and then sucking you so far in that you cannot get enough of it. The way he writes the series, the chapters are broken down into whose PoV they are based on. The guy is so good that I find myself getting a bit depressed when one chapter ends and I have to leave one character for another. The odd thing is that I get the same feeling from getting to the end of the next chapter. Once you start reading one characters PoV you don't want to quit, but when you move on to a new character you find you don't want to stop reading it either. Its weird and if you don't get what I am saying I understand.;) This series is the hardest I have ever had to wait for, surpassing even the terrible wait between the WoT books back when Robert Jordan could still write a great novel.

Check out the coldfire triliogy (C.S. Friedman) sometime. That's the best fantasy ever. Martin is running second in my book (not a close second, but second).

I'm getting ready to reread the set because it isn't much longer for A Feast for Crows to come out. Finally! Fantastic fiction. The characters are so developed. I am often disappointed that too many characters (main ones) are just glossed stereo-types in many stories. Glad to find other fans of Martin.

Excellent, mayhap, but untrue, according to the author himself (georgerrmartin.com). I also, am eagerly awaiting A Feast for Crows, but it's not even finished being written yet, let alone published. I read it in hardback when it first came out, and it seems like forever since that happened. Sheesh--with that kind of ending, how could he leave me hanging for over three years?! Just kidding. Wow, that Storm of Swords. I remember one scene was so powerful, shocking, and saddening I HAD to set the book down. I wanted to cry. I mean, you really get to know and love these characters--even if you start off hating 'em. (Although I STILL hate that awful Cersei.)

What a great series! What great characters, what an involving plot! Yeah, it surpasses Tolkien, but LotR has never been my favorite fantasy (although I give it huge props for basically starting the genre we call fantasy today).

NotTroy, I had to laugh, albeit bitterly: I used to really love the Wheel of Time series, but the last few books have d-r-aaa-ggg-gggg-e-d. I haven't even read the latest one. However, I did just read Eye of the World again, and man! that is some great stuff. Almost makes me weep when I think about the latter books, though.

This is an excellent series, lots of intrigue. Wheel of Time is worthless compared to this, Martin's books seem way more focused and not as intent on incorporating more and more minor (and relatively useless) characters and subplots... I just hope that Martin doesn't lose his vision (keep the series short, George!) and just start spewing out more and more filler like Jordan and Goodkind have been doing the past few years.

Not yet, as far as I know. I won't believe any release dates until the author himself tells us. I really hope it's soon, because this is one of my all time favorite series. The characters are so realistic and have real personality...except Davos, I don't find him at all interesting...but Martin is so good at making you love or hate the characters. And then changing everything around so you begin to love the people you used to despise! Jaime is one of my very favorites, and I am also very fond of Arya and Sandor. Sansa irritates me and I can't stand Cersei! She needs to go! I really want to know more about Jaquen H'ghar too; I keep getting this feeling he's showed up as someone else before...

I completely agree. I don't know how many times I've changed my mind about Jaime. I like Tyrion too. Daenerys has remained one of my favorite...or maybe just the dragons. The characters are so dynamic that you live the story. I think that is what fantasy was meant to be and wish there were more authors like Martin
