A SENSE OF CERTAINTY
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 John 5:14-15, NIV)
This confidence is the foundation of our walk with the Lord. But where does this “sense of certainty” come from and how does it come to us?
- Is it something that is dropped into our hearts by the Holy Spirit from time to time?
- Is it produced by studying and absorbing the written Word of God (Psalm 1:1-3)?
- Is it created as we as we experience the truths of the Word of God we have studied working their way out in our everyday life, thus becoming the “living word” in us (John 6:63)?
- Does it grow as we develop a real and meaningful life of prayer, meaning that we pray, expect to receive what we have asked for and then actually receive what we have asked for?
- Is it the product of a deepening personal relationship with our Saviour? Paul did pray that the Ephesians be given the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that they would “know him better” (Ephesians 1:17).
I would venture to suggest that it is a combination of all of these (and probably others of which we are not conscious) being worked together by the Holy Spirit as he transforms us into the “image of Christ” (2 Corinthians 3:18). It is God, after all, who is working in us to “will and to act according to his good purpose“ (Philippians 2:13).
It is to the glory of God as you and I manifest the “certainty” of our faith.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (John 15:7-8, NIV)
