  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not exactly. Any great increase in volume, stemming from a increase in energy, is an explosion. A very sudden heating of something would also be an explosion.

An nuclear device also creates quite an explosion. It uses a very small chemical reaction to drive the fissile materials together but the explosion itself is definitely not chemical in nature.

Uhuh. So it's the old "any error ever in the history of anything scientific proves all science is false" thing. Plus ça change...

But AV wouldn't do that now would he? After all it is very easy to show that the Bible has many errors itself and that sort of logic would disprove his own belief in God.

Yes, this is also an explosion caused by the sudden heating of something, in this case the air heated up by the energy from the uncontrolled nuklear chain reaction.

Is opening the oven door to get a pie out considered causing an explosion?

No, because this is not a great increase in the volume of the gas in the oven, because the gas in the oven is usually able to exchange pressure with the outside. If you would close a container really tight, so no air could escape, and then you would heat it up a few hundred degrees, and then you'd pop open the lid (or the pressure got to strong), then the gas would expand rapidly and you'd get an explosion.

Usually for something to be considered an "explosion" is that the action propagates faster than the speed of sound at some point. This causes a shock wave to form that continues to travel at the speed of sound even after the explosion itself slows down.

Oh, that's easy. You just invoke as many non Biblically supported "Goddidit"s as you need, and claim that any contrary evidence is misinterpretation by scientists of 6000 year old stuff that was created 13 billion years old.

Fine.

How about you explain to me how the bread and wine literally become the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ?

Sans GOD DOES IT, of course.

Transubstantiation is simply taking Biblical literalism to its logical conclusion, and ignoring the possibility of allegory/metaphor.

Matthew 26 26-28 said:
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

After all, "The Bible says it. That settles it." Right?

I choose the option "false".

For the simple reason that an "explosion" is not what the big bang is describing.
An explosion is the result of reacting chemicals. Which is not what the big bang was. Whatever it was, it wasn't the result of reacting chemicals, since chemicals don't exist at T = 0.
