  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think his angle comes from that science report that was released yesterday. One of the questions awkwardly asked if the universe started with an explosion (rather than an expansion). The answer given was yes. Though technically, it is false. The BB is not an explosion.
Very good.

Uhuh. So it's the old "any error ever in the history of anything scientific proves all science is false" thing. Plus ça change...

I think it's called irony.

Yeah the idea of an explosion I think originally came about because an Expansion is what an explosion does. But in the BB there was no actual explosion.
People used that so the layman would understand the basic mechanics of it more easily.

The fact that it is called the Big Bang doesn't help.

A bad idea from the start that seemed like a good one back then.

Fred Hoyle is credited with coining the term "Big Bang" during a 1949 radio broadcast. It is popularly reported that Hoyle, who favored an alternative "steady state" cosmological model, intended this to be pejorative, but Hoyle explicitly denied this and said it was just a striking image meant to highlight the difference between the two models

This explains it quite well
