Not intended to spark a fight, but I do want to know what people think.

It has been my experience that, if you ask a random Christian to quote his/her favorite verse in the Bible, at least 90% will say John 3:16. Now, the cynical part of me wants to know: Of that 90%, how many pick John 3:16 because it truly is their favorite Scripture, and how many pick John 3:16 because they memorized it in some VBS way back when they were six years old, and it's still the only Scripture they can quote from memory? ;)

Just being a little imp. But honestly, is there some validity here?

My first introduction to John 3:16 was watching footbal, and they'd pan over the crowd, and there was always that one dude with the rainbow wig holding a sign that said John 3:16.

I don't know what my favorite verse is, really, as I've studied the bible as a whole concept and not broken down into random verses.

I have lots of favorite verses...and most I can say with ease. It's just remembering what book, chapter and verse they are that get me.

I think for many John 3:16 is the root of the bible.

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

Oh, the sweetness of those words! I could honestly see why so many people would pick it as their favorite verse.

Actually my favorite verse is Romans 8:28...;)

I think it just sums up so much about God's love to us, what he gave for us, and what we can hope for. Such a small verse that has a powerful promise to us believers.

:)

Revelation 14:16 ^___^
j/k, I don't really have a favorite, but the one I know is one in Job, something talking about "I have made a pact with thine eyes, not to look upon young girls with lust." and another in the gospels"Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted", Ezekiel 18:32 is one I got too. :D I think that's one of my favorites.

I like the direction this thread is going.

Actually my favorite verse is First John 3:1, which from King James says: Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not.

It explained a lot of things to me when I was a school kid getting cruel treatment from the other school kids. This brought me a lot of comfort.

I guess a better question is, what is your favorite verse and why? And if it really IS John 3:16, that's fine. :)

Peace and blessings all.

This is my favorite chapter:

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah
8 Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields [b] with fire.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."
11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

... lol! ... this is such a hard question for me because it changes almost daily. It depends on where I'm at at the time. I have a top favorite list. If I had to pick one ... I would probably pick Romans 8:28, also. It was the first one that came to mind and I have it framed on the wall in my office. Another favorite is Matthew 10:24 and the verses following. It's just comforting and reassuring.

I was the Bertie Wooster of my day--winning the scriptural memory prize at my Christian school as a child. This has given me a lot more choices than John 3:16.

Right now I'm right fond of Is. 55:1

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

I don't know if it's mean or not, but it's valid. Statistically, we christians are an extremely biblically illiterate bunch, much to our shame and discredit.
A minister once said, "If you want to know what the Bible really says, ask an atheist." I'm afraid he's right... :(

Moriah knows the Book VERY well indeed. But where others bes prone to misperceive that as "Satan quoting scripture" it avails little, bes afraid.
