A quote I found, is it OK?

I came across a quote in another internet forum and decided that it should become a background picture. Now, I showed this to a friend of mine and he claims it to be blasphemous and sinful and all that. I disagree.

The quote is as follows:

" You know what my favourite thing in the world is? I'll tell you.

Each week, millions and millions of upper middle class American citizens put on expensive dress clothes, and load themselves into SUVs and drive past homeless shelters, orphanages, prisons, missions, and halfway houses on their way to avery expensive and nice church, where somebody tells them how to be more like Jesus.

That is [censored] awesome, let me tell you"

If it is sinful in some way, I'd sure like to know why, and if not, I'd like to know why also. Always nice to get a stronger hold on the religion. I'd link to the picture but apparently since I am so new at these forums, I can't do that yet :\

It describes something that should not happen, we should all minister to the poor, those in prison, the homeless, the sick, the suffering. We should pray for them too, and for our Lord to have mercy on us all.

The opening and closing line is a bit sarcastic and could be dropped without losing the message.

Blasphemous? Does it say anything against God? No.

Sinful? IIRC, the Bible tells you to look at yourself before criticizing the behaviour of others, but it does not forbid it, especially if you don´t intend to exclude you from the critique.

So I would say it is neither. I would also consider it completely on the point, and a very meaningfull quote.

But I have to add two caveats.

First, I am just an Atheist, so my opinion would not count very much among Christians of the type your friend seems to be.

Second, this is the Internet. Be prepared to be attacked for everything you state.

But you will always find people who support you as well. Welcome to this Forum.

I heard the saying once....Love God, hate the fan club.

It is a very interesting quote directed at some of the hypocritical Christians. But then again, you might get some flack for judging people, when really it is just an 'observation'!

I don't see it as blasphemous, but something that will really make people think! But use your own discretion as to whether you want to use it or not.

CERVANTES:
I have lived nearly fifty years, and I have seen life as it is. Pain, misery, hunger ... cruelty beyond belief. I have heard the singing from taverns and the moans from bundles of filth on the streets. I have been a soldier and seen my comrades fall in battle ... or die more slowly under the lash in Africa. I have held them in my arms at the final moment. These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no gallant last words ... only their eyes filled with confusion, whimpering the question: "Why?" I do not think they asked why they were dying, but why they had lived. (He rises, and through the following speech moves into the character of DON QUIXOTE as a musical underscore and change of setting begin) When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams -- this may be madness. To seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness. And maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be."

Hi Pyaemia,

I don't see that as sinful, but maybe your friend was convicted by it? Sometimes when convicted, it is more natural for people to strike out against the one through who it comes versus looking within.

I see that some of the statement is censored, so I am assuming it is profanity? I do not think profane communications are appropriate from those imitating Christ, but beyond that, there is more truth in that statement than anything else.

I think it's right on point for a good many ... I agree that probably those that are a tad offended by it are because perhaps it hits a bit close to home?

I understand what they are saying, but it is naive to believe that every churchgoer should rid himself of every luxury in life so that he may give away his money to the homeless, let alone every one he drives by on the way to church.

Yeah. Who would ask us to sell everything we have and give it to the poor?

Hmm. Actually, that's sort of ringing a bell. Luke 18-25, maybe?

18
And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
20
Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
21
And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
22
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23
And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
24
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
25
For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

I guess... If you want to call Jesus "naive", you go right ahead. I might even agree with you. Hopelessly naive, innocent beyond words... The kind of leader men would die for, really.

If you give that jab more than a cursory glace, perhaps you will see why it does not mean what it initially apears to.

Basically what is being said is that (generally) Christians don't practice what they preach (or what is taught them) and I agree. The emphasis today seems to be in promoting and maintaining the religious institution known as the church while people's needs are not met (whether that need may be salvation, counselling or temporal assistance).

It is not blasphemous in any way, shape or form. I suspect your friend does not know the meaning of the word blasphemous.

I think the quote undermines the point it is trying to make if the censored word is, well, a word you thought best to censor.

It is quite an attack on many, many Western Christains, and I suspect the people who will be bothred by it the most will be those who it describes or thoe who aspire to that lifestyle.
