  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question...

Would you call your children if you have any lambs or kids?

I may write an essay on this and need some ideas or responses. Your thoughts please.
Would I call them on the telephone? Would I name them? Would I name lambs? Or baby goats?

How would you prefer to call your children. Your kids or your lambs?
I notice many parents talk about 'their kids' but hardly mention 'their lambs'.
In the Bible, Jesus calls us his sheep and lambs. Of course he is using this as a term of affection as he's like our shepherd. Not our goatherd.

Or let me rephrase, how do your own parents refer to their offspring?
What would you call your children if you have any?

Or maybe you would use another affectionate term like 'sweetie' or 'dear' or some other nickname. I just notice so many parents calling their children kids..but actually kids aren't well looked after in the Bible!! Its more a term for a child that's run wild, like a scapegoat.

Bear in mind the sheep listen to the shepherd and Him alone.

I would call my son "John" and my daughter "Naomi", I don't like terms of endearment, never understood them. I call my father "parent" or "father".

That's because "kids" is a universally accepted term for children and "lambs" isn't.

In the Bible, Jesus calls us his sheep and lambs. Of course he is using this as a term of affection as he's like our shepherd. Not our goatherd.

And Jesus didn't speak English. The reasons that he referred to us as sheep and lambs are completely different from the reasons that the language we're speaking 2000 years later has a word that can refer to the young humans or young goats (and I don't know how that usage came into being).

My parents have nicknames for my sister and I. My mom sometimes refers to my sister as "girlie" (although she's not necessarily "girly"). I'm usually referred to as son if they're not using my nickname. Depending on my kids personality, I might come up with an appropriate nickname for them.

My best friend's dad always jokingly refers to him and his siblings as 'fruit of my loins'. It cracks me up.

Jesus says He will separate the sheep from the goats. A kid is the offspring of a goat. So, calling children "kids" . . . is something it seems many people of the world do. So, yes I can understand taking issue with what the world has been training people to call children. I suppose I would simply call my children "children". But I would need to bring them up with an example of gentleness and humility > what I label them is not enough! :)

The affectionate names that were given to me and other youngin's in the family would be blocked by the filter here :asd:

I wouldn't call my hypothetical kids "lambs". That'd be weird, unless they were furries or something.

I call my furry kids all sorts of stuff aside their names.

This made me think of the reverse..what do you call your parents? Mum, dad, or mother and father. Some dont call their dads daddy and just use their first names.

I know some refer to their dad as 'the old man' which I think is a bit mean. In the Bible Jesus says when we are adopted we cry out '-abba' meaning daddy. We recognise our parents as our own.

I don't know but I could see using the term lamb in a humorous way. I am very relaxed about nicknames and growing up every member of my immediate family had one. In fact, it is very unlikely that I would not give my kids some form of nickname. To me, I don't view pet names or nicknames for one's parents as being disrespectful. I see it as the result of closeness and a level of familiarity unique to the members of my family. And yes, I have special nicknames for both of my parents.

LOL My parents and grandparents had lots of names for us. lol

The one that always annoyed me was when my mother would call me, in front of any girl in whom I was interested, "my baby boy".

She would also ask me, in front of any girl in whom I was interested, "Is this your little doanie?" Doanie is a hillbilly nickname for "girlfriend".

My mum had a nickname for me in chinese that means 'baby' but I insisted on being called by my given name. Lol. My sister also had one that just meant 'girl'.

One of my aunts is called number 3 as shes the third sister, and the another one is called pig as thats a term of affection in chinese.

Well at least nobody is calling their child a kid.
When i hear parents do that i think.. They have no clue. I think its sad, cos kids actually grow up with no discipline and no care. They can roam free in the wilderness but, they are not really looked after or in a flock like sheep are.

If I did have a child, I would never call them "kid", because a kid is a young goat.

I think Jesus even mentioned God was like a mother hen looking after her chicks.
Nathan told David a story about someone with a pet lamb whom he doted on and how someone stole it. David was convicted over this story with his affair with Bathsheba.
