Hello to all!

My first post in here . . . and I just wanted to ask a question.

Before I became Orthodox, I used to be very involved in a wonderful organization run by the UMC, called the "Walk to Emmaus". Many of the Methodist churches in my area (Dallas) were very active in this, along with other churches, so I met lots of wonderful Methodist Christian laypeople and clergy. I just wondered if any of you were familiar with or involved in this ministry?

I went on my initial walk in Feb, 97. Have remained very involved except since we hada baby and entering seminary at the same time. Have been involved in Chrysalis as well and am sceduled to be a spiritual director for our local Chrysalis community late next year. Welcome!!!

That's great! I did a couple of Chrysalis weekends, too, as Table Leader, and I also helped out in the kitchen when my younger son attended. What great weekends those were.

Unfortunatly celtie no. The interesting thing about emmaus is that even though it is not a secret it is better to not know the goins on wehen you go on one. If you are interested talk to your pstor to find out if there is an emmaus community near you.

Just to give you a very general idea - these are 3 day "retreats" with the purpose of deepening your relationship to Christ and to your local church.

I would highly, strongly, absolutely recommend signing up for one if you have the opportunity. There are weekends for women, men, college age, & high school age, as well as for prisoners and for their families. But they all follow the same basic form and purpose.

I hope you get to attened an Emmaus and you'll see why the main info is kept hush hush. Plus I did give advice I said to talk to your pastor so . Just joking around peace and goodwill.

It's ok, I still loves ya! Unfortunately I am not currently attending a Methodist church, but a non-denom and if I even mention something remotely connected with Wesley I get these "what planet are you from" looks. Ah, the sacrifices we make for family. But if the opportunity ever comes up I will definately look into the Emmaus program.

Long story behind this. The Cursillo, or short course in Christianity, was developed in a Roman Catholic parish in Spain where the men were very much uninterested in "churchy" things, and the women were the mainstay of the parish -- as a way to get the men more enthusiastic and involved.

It grew from there, spreading across much of the Christian world as a Catholic thing. Eventually, Episcopalians decided it was an excellent idea, and got permission to put on Cursillo weekends of their own. And many of these, once the movement got going, had Methodist, Lutheran, and other-denomination laymen and -women, and clergy, participating.

The Walk to Emmaus is the Methodist three-day program on this model, and has done a few innovative things that have been copied by the "older" programs. (No details on this, for obvious reasons )

I've been told that the "secrecy" aspect is very much overdone -- but the fact of the program is that, unlike the typical retreat, the entire weekend is carefully crafted to make Christianity come alive in attendees' lives -- and does a wonderful job of this, with about a 95% "success rate" in terms of accomplishing what its goals are for each individual.

De Colores, my friend. Good job in the details. The secrecy factor is going to be the reason some never go to the Walk to Emmaus--makes us sound too much like a cult. When I am sponsoring someone, I tell them this.
"I will not tell you everything about the weekend, there are no secrets, but there are a few surprises. But I will answer any question you have about any topic--without lying and without holding back. I will tell you if you are about to mess up one of the wonderful surprises, but even then--I will still answer you truthfully."
It seems to put them at ease for whatever they've heard about the secret stuff. My sponsor told me not to worry about the chicken sacrifices--I'd get used to it . Not that I believed him, but still, I was nervous enough, if you know what I mean.

The people who sponsored my sponsors went through Cursillo when they were Episcopalians. Then when the Emmaus movement grew in our area, they became active (he was Clergy), and brought quite a few of us into it. I was Anglican at the time, one of the very, very few Anglicans active in Emmaus. I even set up an Icon of Christ the Good Shepherd for our Chapel when I was the Lay Director. They were wonderfully open to my wierdness!
