• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If anyone is on this drug... let me know what you think.

I'm on 100 mg. once a day, and when I was on more I gained some weight. Now I'm trying to lose it and I'm not sure if the drug is stopping me or if I'm just not eating the right stuff... I'm thinking of joining Curves and I'm just wondering if it's worth it... if it's actually going to help or if it's a waste of money... if anyone's been where I am now I'd really appreciate the advice!

Thanks! :)

I take about 300mg at night. I gained at first when on it because when it kicks in, for some reason all I can think about is food. At first I would get up and eat. Now I control myself and don't.

When I did gain, regular dieting and exercising did work to get the weight off. I lost the same amounts on Weight Watchers my mother was losing.

So I think Curves would help. I used to belong to a Curves and really liked it. :)

Hello, and welcome to CF! Feel free to join us anytime!

yes, seroquel is one med known to cause weight gain, but do not despair. For me it was a n issue of whether or not the med helped me feel better enough to deal with my food and excercise issues. i was only successful in losing my weight (100 pounds so far-not due to any med side effect but due to depression and eatingand not excercising!!!) when I regain my enegry and stability form the right med and was able to deal with the weight loss battle.

Others I know have never won the battle and come to tthe conclusion that they would rather be soudn of mind and round, than thin and crazy-and that is a direct quote from a friend of mine.

So never feel like weight gainfroma med is a forgone conclusion and there is nothing you can do about it.

The reality with curves is, even if it does not change your waistline, EXCERCISE will HELP your mood and general feeling of well being, so no, I do not believe inwouold be a waste of your money, unless you do not go.

But know that weight lose also requires diet control-it is just to easy to put more calories in our bodies that you can possibly excercise off. So yes, it does usually take both diet and excercise to make a difference!

Blessings! And may the seroquel bring you the stabiliy and energy to do the things you choose in life!!!

I'm aware of both side effects, but the sedative effects seem more prevelant. It's a better tolerated agent it seems than the old line agents like Haldol.
yepp ... i was on seroquel :yum: and gained alittle weight. but i have no isurance and that stuff is spendy! haldol  side effects are a bugger! i think a little weight is way better than seizuers and trimmers of haldol.

anyhow, a excersize class just adds more health on in your favor  ...

once i got use to seroquel, the weight issue dissapeared. i got more active. even cleaned the church a few days a week. :D

as always... tell doctor about all your concerns!

Seroquel, allows me to have regulated sleep in my life. I take 300Mg per night.

I've noticed increased appetite and weight gain, but since I get a lot of excercise through my work as a contractor and my volunteering with habitat for Humanity, I have had few problems.

I understand the concern and I wonder if there is an alternative for people who need sleep and relief from Bipolar depression.

I cannot speak for any of the weight loss programs, but I can say that taking a 30 minute walk 3-5 times a week can help to maintain weight and help with depression.

As always, if you are experiencing concern for weight gain and/or depression and think that your medication may be at fault, jot down a couple questions for your Doctor/Therapist.

Smile today! It burns calories and soothes the soul.

Thanks Stephen... the smile comment made me smile. I've never heard that saying but it is so true.

So here's something to make you laugh... (my family thinks its quite funny)

So I ended up scoring myself a free week pass at Curves, which I'm taking full advantage of. I went yesterday and again today and it's definitely a workout. Of course on the little blocks in the middle where it's suggested that you walk or do a light jog, I ran on the spot so needless to say I was very tired at the end. And I felt pretty good... until this afternoon, when my body decided it was going to stiffen right up. Now I'm walking around like a little old lady with my back hunched over because it hurts. haha. I didn't realize I was that out of shape!!

I like it though. Unfortunately I'm not going to be joining... It's 150 bucks just to start up... and I'm not working and unemployment doesn't pay that well. So I'm going to ride out the week (if my body lets me) and see if there are any gyms in the area that are more reasonable. If not, I'm going to try and force myself to go for a run every day and try and get back into shape. Even if I don't lose weight, it will make me feel better I'm sure... (once my bones get used to it of course... haha)

Anyways just thought I'd share... :)

 Hey Radiochick  ,

Reading your story about "over doing it the 1st time round" brought back painful memories ^_^

Yesterday I started working out on one of those "huge" excercise" ball and yes...of course I did too much

I find walking (people say I speed walk all the time) and doing morning stretches help me lots! You don't hear much about stretching these days as "they" (the people who are trying to promote all different "excercise gadgets")don't give stretching the benifits it deserves. In past times I have found that it firms and strengthens my "out of shape" muscles.

Good luck on the goal to go gogging !

I gained weight while on it too, but I'm on a smaller dosage now and I'm watching what I eat, so the weight is coming off. I think joining curves would help a lot, I hear it's great... but you also need to watch what you're eating, that's what will help you the most. :) Anyway, it might be better to just exercise at home or outside... it's free, and works just as well!
