So, my best friend and I were talking this week about all the Aggie stuff and her job situation (it sucks. she's away from her husband 4 days out of 7) and we talked about the "Whatever you ask in My Name, it will be given to you" and "Ask and you shall receive" verses.

And we both want to know...

How do you get from "anything you ask in My name...will be given to you" all the way to "unless there's something else we have in mind."

Because, some days it just seems like one big giant Mind...uh...you know.

I get that way sometimes especially when I hear "Thy will be done". It's like why do I bother praying if His will be done? Then someone throws in "Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven". Maybe it's the word "bind" that throws me because I'm not totally sure of the definition. "Pray without ceasing....." is another one that baffles me. I can't fathom that either. The only one I've resigned myself to is "In everything pray and give thanks....." I kinda have a handle on that. I guess I expect instantaneous answers or at least an answer in the near future.

It's hard for me to answer this question, especially right now. God is really teaching me patience.....I'm almost afraid to pray lately....as God has different ideas than I do. :) Hubby's job is starting to turn around....now we are waiting on paperwork.

One thing I do know is that God loves me and knows what's best....that is my comfort. I don't understand those verses that you mentioned either....and Jesus still loves me anyway. Praise Him for that. :prayer:

I'm glad DogMom and I aren't the only ones with these questions!

All I keep getting when I ask God this question is "Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding" which, okay fine and good, Lord but...why did you have to make me so curious? *G*

The "Thy will be done" is another that gets me too, Rad. For me, at least this week, it's been "When will MY will be the same as YOUR will, God?" Because, sometimes, I just really wish He would say "okay, Kim. You've done a great job with everything I've set for you to do. You're not perfect but, hey, who but Me is? I'm going to give you what you want because, hey it's what's going to be best for you too!"

Why can't it ever work out that way?

Seajoy, I learned to never EVER ask God for patience. He likes to teach it to us in new and unique ways!! (example...my 10 year engagement!)

The Third Petition.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What does this mean?--Answer.
The good and gracious will of God is done indeed without our prayer; but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.

How is this done?--Answer.
When God breaks and hinders every evil counsel and will which would not let us hallow the name of God nor let His kingdom come, such as the will of the devil, the world, and our flesh; but strengthens and keeps us steadfast in His Word and in faith unto our end. This is His gracious and good will.
Ol' Father Martin was a wise man. :)

<Chuckle> I once asked God for patience when I merely got frustrated. It's gone so well, my wife has graciously asked that I seek help for my anger management issues.

No, WS, you are not the only one who struggles with 'asking' vs 'His Will'. Before I returned to the Lutheran church, my wife and I explored a few different denominations seeking one which we both would be comfortable in. One we were committed to mutated over time until they finally began 'Cat & Dog' theology, otherwise recited as "It's Not About You." I finally had to flee that church as my mind kept seeing God as some cosmic egocentric narcissist.

Ok ... that just ain't healthy.

To this day God's Will scares me to death, even with the good things He's done in my life. I know it's not the right way, but I'm right there with you:

"God - I know I wouldn't be perfect, but if things could just go my way I would be your faithful steward and so many worthy people would be helped ... please, pretty please with Sugar & Peas?"

Don't worry - you're normal, or at the very least there's a bunch of us just like you.
:groupray:
