  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do modern home electronics all have little colored LED's lit up whenever they're plugged in? The TV, DVR, even my air conditioner plug all have green or red lights wasting power. What's the purpose? One TV has no light when it's on, but lights up when I turn it off. I don't need a light to tell me the TV's off.

Honestly,I am not sure, but it uses far less energy than the devices themselves. Appliances typically such power when they are off anyway. Cell phone and other chargeable are constantly sucking power even at 100 percent.

Even worse, my phone USB cable looks like Christmas lights when charging.even when my phone is not attached, it is still drawing power.

When my television is on, the Vizio light comes on, like I need the distraction.

Good question.

On a related note, why does every appliance have a digital clock? My oven, microwave, DVD player, TV, fridge and landline phone all proudly display the time. I have even seen toasters with a clock display, though mine is more modest.

I mean, knowing the time is useful, but is it really necessary on everything?

It doesn't waste much power at all. And if something goes wrong, it helps to decide where the problem is.

I don't need a light to tell me the TV's off.

It's not off; the light tells you it's on standby.

Yeah I know, "standby". Our forefathers called that "plugged into the wall". I'm not trying to launch a rocket.

Simply so you know that there is power to the appliance. The LED doesn't need to be lit when the appliance is on as it should be obvious that there is power to it

I don't need to know that there is power to the appliance.

Good question.

Even better question. One thunderclap during a storm, the power goes out for half a second, and I have to spend 20 minutes resetting all those digital clocks.

Yes you're not trying to "Launch a Rocket" But do you wan't you DVR's to Record your shows without having to turn them on?
Do you want you TV's to Turn On when you press the button on the Remote ?

If you're resetting your clocks after an outage, that's because you either never put the Battery Backup in the clock, or it's gone dead.

For most other devices, you can get versions that will set themselves.

I have to get a SmartSet clock, I have to get a Battery Backup, get these other devices...is technology supposed to be labor-saving? Or money-making? I'm going to make my own sundial.

May I suggest premium quality cast aluminum with four layers of non-stick marble coating for the post, and polished brass finished face and gnomon?

I think you can get the parts at DIY.

Does the bible explain how sun dials work?
Almost.

2 Kings 20:9 And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?

Isaiah 38:8 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.

Apparently you're in a higher income bracket than me. I was thinking more of a stick in the dirt with some pebbles spread around it.

So a sundial isn't reliable as God can move the sun whenever it pleases Him, or someone needs a longer day for battle.

Your lack of relativity aside, I would say God can cause science to take a hike where appropriate; be it stopping the earth from rotating, or rotating it the other way.

For one that LED uses so little power it's not worth worrying about. For another your TV or computer consumes power even when shut off, the only solution to unplug them or use a power strip that has smart capabilities and turns off all power to the device when not in use.
