Dr. Who made a big to do of subliminal messages and social cohesion with their Vote Saxon mock campaign, all part of the story line, where a super brainy evil alien coerces the human population into electing him Prime Minister of England,

pretty enlightening at that time, and this clip is only 15 seconds long!

Mr Show did a great satire sketch about pointless political ads, but I just re-watched it, can't link it here due to one bit of naughty language at the end.

Basically, it's two rich guys bashing each other until Reverend Anders purchases and ad to tell them to stop with the hurtful and unnecessary advertising, then the two rich guys choice forces and form the "United Committee to Crush Reverend Anders" and start running ads against him.
