Let's look only at those verses which Jesus himself said. The rest are totally irrelavent, since they are not words Jesus himself spoke.

That takes your list down to two:

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Mat 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

Matt. 16:18 does not specify anything outside of the Jewish Synagogue and religion. It does not indicate that Jesus is establishing a new "church".

But for the other, when taken in context, Matthew 18:17 is talking about the Jewish Synagogue, not about a Church he himself has already established.

I am a fan of Eusebius, but I do worry some about his history of those first two centuries, since he does not provide his source materials (Im thinking oral rumors is as good as he has) and he is so far removed from the events in question.

But Im the skeptic I suppose.

The historical evidence of St. James being the first Bishop of Jerusalem has no bearing on the fact that St. Peter was the first Bishop of Rome.

The list of books in the front of your Bible is not part of Holy Scripture. The books of Scripture were written in the time of the Apostles, so they couldn't include all the popes down to the present day. That list is a piece of reference material attached to the Bible, and doesn't have any authority at all.

In other Fathers Know Best tracts we have shown that the Fathers recognized Peter as the rock on which Jesus declared he would build his Church; that this gave Peter a special primacy; and that Peter traveled to Rome, where he was martyred. Eusebius of Caesarea


"Paul testifies that Crescens was sent to Gaul [2 Tim. 4:10], but Linus, whom he mentions in the Second Epistle to Timothy [2 Tim. 4:21] as his companion at Rome, was Peter’s successor in the episcopate of the church there, as has already been shown. Clement also, who was appointed third bishop of the church at Rome, was, as Paul testifies, his co-laborer and fellow-soldier [Phil. 4:3]" (Church History 3:4:9–10 [A.D. 312]).


Pope Julius I


"[The] judgment [against Athanasius] ought to have been made, not as it was, but according to the ecclesiastical canon. . . . Are you ignorant that the custom has been to write first to us and then for a just decision to be passed from this place [Rome]? If, then, any such suspicion rested upon the bishop there [Athanasius of Alexandria], notice of it ought to have been written to the church here. "f any bishop loses the judgment in some case [decided by his fellow bishops] and still believes that he has not a bad but a good case, in order that the case may be judged anew . . . let us honor the memory of the apostle Peter by having those who have given the judgment write to Julius, bishop of Rome, so that if it seem proper he may himself send arbiters and the judgment may be made again by the bishops of a neighboring province" (Canon 3 [A.D. 342]).

Ambrose of Milan
