We know that the people who reside in Bethany don't know about the outside world. But...does the outside world know about Bethany and what goes on there? How the people's memories are erased? If so, how widely is that information known? Do only a few people know about Bethany? Maybe some government organizations or religious groups or something?
Just wondered because I'm trying to come up with a reason for my character having been taken to Bethany (one that will be found out later, of course), and I need to know who knows about it in the outside world...if anyone. Thanks!
The outside world is a twisted wasteland on many levels. We could see a little of it from what the guards could see from the Wall. So really, I wouldn't know what to tell you at this point. Essentially though, Bethany is in the middle of nowhere.
All the Bethans know of what goes on (not just the government), and its similar to the meat industry in modern America. There are a few that are similar to animal activists, but they are few. Of course, that could even draw parallels to slavery.
So, in other words, what goes on in Bethany tends to stay in Bethany. They send out merchants (Bethans, not the Empty), with goods processed above ground in Bethany. Not much is gathered about the surroundings, but they know that if they travel south they will eventually hit something. Usually they never come back, but those that do are made Empty regardless of where they came from.
If you are wondering who outside knows about it... It might be a legend or fairy tale of sorts to an obscure group, or maybe just an imaginary place of any and many names used by mothers to frighten their children into staying in bed during the night. Otherwise, its not highly regarded as a real place.
I do have a small clarification: is everyone being summoned to the cathedral, or just our characters?
Just a select few. Your characters, mostly, as well as a few NPCs. My character will be one of them, and how many players we actually end up with with affect if there are any more NPCs.
