When I was pregnant, I was speaking with a lady who was a member of the Charismatic movement. She told me some things that seemed quite irrational and really upset me. I wanted to post some of her viewpoints here and see if they are standard Charismatic teachings or if she's one those people who take their beliefs a little bit to the extreme. Thanks in advance for your help!

She told me that because I have not been blessed with the gift of tongues that I was not really saved.

She told me if I did not pray over my pregnancy in tongues my baby would be deformed.

She told me if I had a menstrual cycle it's because I'm a sinner and have not received Christ.

She told me that if I ever experience physical pain it's because I don't pray in tongues.

She claimed God hates people who don't pray in tongues.

Basically, her entire argument revolved around "if you dont have the gift of tongues you're evil". I was of the impression that while it's wonderful to pray in the Spirit, not everyone will receive the gift of tongues upon receiving Christ. :help:

She is another one of these people that feel that if you don't have the gift, Then you're not a Christian or as good as she is. That statement is pure BUNK. There are lots of Christians who are saved and don't speak in tongues. We don't have to, It is stated right in the Bible that we don't have to to be saved. We are saved thru the blood Christ shed for us on Calvary's hill. Tell her to blow it out her ear, She's wrong.

Thank you for your answers. I figured she was probably one of those who use their gifts as leverage against other people. I was mostly offended by the comment about my unborn child. That's just not something you joke about. Anyway, thanks again!
msjones21, I would say that that woman has more problems than you do... one of which may be that she doesn't have the "gift".

Funny. Paul doen't think so:
7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[1] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[2] 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
(1 Corinthians 12)

So all non-christians' babies are deformed? So in countries with only a few percent of the population christian nearly 100% of the population are deformed?

Suggest she goes to see a doctor.

Suggest she reads paul - the thorn; the endless privations and hardships. Why did he dislike being scourged?

Um... See above?

It sounds like she needs help.
As a charismatic I am extremely depressed anyone could say such things.

MsJones,

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. None of what she said represents mainstream charismatic theology

I would just say "Thank you for your concern" and then remind her that it's time for her medication.

Are you sure this wasn't Carrie's mother you were speaking to?

UNTRUE to all of the above and No, this is not typical Charasmatic belief. Not any that I know of anyway. There is a Penticostal group though that does teach that if you don't speak in tongues then you are not saved.

She sounds like a person who worships the gift instead of the Giver. People like that irritate me to no end  . They give us Charismatics a bad reputation. I wonder if this woman had kids herself, and if they were normal, LOL?

There are many false speakers out there and many are teachers. After all how do these people get these ideas in the first place. While we point the finger at this woman and make comments that her statements are false, what about the so-called preachers who are out there pushing or worse creating the false teachings in the first place?

We all need to check the source to the Source, the real Source ----> God's Word-----> The Bible.

Not only are these viewpoints not standard charismatic teaching. They are in fact in stark disagreement with charismatic teaching. Charismatic teaching believes in health and prosperity for you and your baby as a blessing from God. something to be sought for in faith and prayer. Charasmatic teaching says that sickness and things of the type you described are not God's perfect will for us and we pray against such things. That we as believers should pray blessings on people. Whatever this woman's issues were, they were not in line with any charismatic teaching that I know of.
I pray that you and your baby will be healthy and blessed by the Lord. may the Lord Jesus who is the source of all blessings, bless you and your baby with wisdom, peace and every spiritual and material blessing in abundance.

Charismatic Teachings; where does one find those standard Charismatic Teachings?

Try going to your local christian bookstore and looking under the section "charismatic interest". Or one step better try attending some charismatic churches and asking their leadership there.

The restoration Word of Faith church, Arken, I attended for years, say that the gift of tongues should come at some point after being saved. They don't say that you're not saved if you don't have the gift of tongues, but that you haven't developed since being saved
The pentecostal church I attend nowadays, makes no complaints if you haven't received the gift of tongues
She told me if I did not pray over my pregnancy in tongues my baby would be deformed
Arken does not specifically instruct to pray anything when pregnant, but saies its important to pray in tongues and to use the gift of tongues
The pentecostal church saies its good to use the gift of tongues and that it is a convenient way to pray
She told me if I had a menstrual cycle it's because I'm a sinner and have not received Christ
No such opinions from either of Arken or the pentecostal church. You should watch out for churches makin that kind of a comment - it seem to me that maybe that church then thinks contraceptives are sin. I think condoms and regular contraceptive-pills are not sin at any stage, and that so called mini-pills are not sin during breast-feeding
She told me that if I ever experience physical pain it's because I don't pray in tongues
Arken can sometimes say that its important to stay in prayer, but they don't use to specifically say it like that
The pentecostal church doesn't teach in that manner, only that it's good to use the gift of tongues, not specifically like that
She claimed God hates people who don't pray in tongues
Neither church teaches that kind of thing
Basically, her entire argument revolved around "if you dont have the gift of tongues you're evil":help:
No such teachings
