Isn't it interesting though that A&E doesn't feel threatened by the adulterers who threaten them? Or the pedophiles, or the Beastophiles? Just the gays.

More like, the fact that gays were lumped into the same category as adulterers, pedophiles, and bestiality.

Christians outnumber homosexuals in this country and in the world at large.

Christians and homosexuals are not disjoint sets.

If the guy had been gay, and said some ignorant remarks about straight people, pretty sure he wouldn't be suspended from the show for his remarks. Most of you people would agree he should not get suspended either if a gay man made such remarks about straight sex.

It's a double standard in society. Woman calls a man fat, it's okay. Man calls a woman fat, all of a sudden he needs to go to sensitivity training. Woman says a man's butt is cute, everyone is okay. Man says a woman's but is cute, all of a sudden it's a sexual harassment issue. Woman says she's raped by a man, it's a big deal. Man says he's raped by a woman, no one believes him.

DOUBLE STANDARD in society, period. If you aren't gay, good looking straight male, or a woman, then the Networks won't cut you slack on anything you say or do that isn't scripted.

Thank you folks, for mostly keeping this a good conversation with a whole lot of respect for differing viewpoints.

I was told today that I should be crucified and then have really crude sex acts performed on my corpse because I support Phil's right to say what he wants. So I'm thankful that here, at least, I know that even if one of y'all is thinking it, you aren't going to say it. :D

A little thread derail, but I would TOTALLY watch a show about a guy and pickles. :p

Considering the way it would be scripted and overly-dramatized, I would stay well away from it.

I really don't understand the interest in these kinds of shows or the sudden interest in rednecks/hillbillies.

I miss so many old programs... I can't even find Mutual of Omaha stuff anymore, though I can't say I watch Discovery enough to figure out if it even airs anymore- I'm too put off by these new types of shows.

People are freaking scary, this is why I have trust issues :(

Sorry about the nasty things people sent you *hugs* We can all disagree without becoming angry 12-year-olds, and there's no excuse for that kind of behavior.

I remember being fascinated with the first two installments of The Real World on MTV. After that, I pretty much avoided reality TV like that.

I like shows that are reality shows yet you know there's still stuff scripted for it. I like Say Yes to the Dress, for example. Or Pawn Stars. I also like reality crime shows, but I don't think those fit this bill of reality shows. Documentaries with re-enactments and the like. I love a good mystery, and I used to watch that Deadly Love or whatever it was called where it was usually spouses or significant others that were doing the killing.

You can't script TRUE reality, but oftentimes TRUE reality is too harsh for the FCC...

My mom would say that she doesn't watch these types of shows because she has to deal with enough annoying people in real life, why watch them on TV?

Of the "unscripted reality shows" I guess Top Chef is my favorite.

Preacherswife and others offended at A&E's actions - I can only assume you will join me in condemning this vicious censorship and demanding that Christianforums allow for true free speech.

Combine that idea with:
It exposes how weak their position is, when they cannot respond with a better argument, so they try to shut down the discussion. Seems very familiar.....

Bolded part is especially true for the veteran forum members here.

Bottom line? I see no issue with A&E taking the action they did as a private company. I disagree with Phil and many members here stance on the issue. I have been and would be willing again to put my life on the line for his right to hold that stance and speak his mind. I would do the same for A&E. I am sorry that people were so uncivil to you. Some get way to caught up to allow that reasonable people can disagree on a subject.

Try making a speech at a company picnic about how morally reprehensible (insert demographic of people) are, for any reason, (gods, no gods) and tell me how it goes.

Apparently not! What hypocrites. Phil Robertson didn't write the good Book, he just quoted it. And now I will quote what he quoted.

“Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

AND I will add this...

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20)

I'm not ashamed to quote Scripture or to testify, in public, of not only the love of God, but also of His righteousness, holiness, and justice. I'm not afraid or ashamed to talk about God's wrath against all sin on the Day of Judgment or that people who die without their sins being forgiven in Christ will go to hell. I have talked about these things before and I will continue to do so with my last dying breath. I fully commend and stand by Phil Robertson for his bold witness for Christ. I'm thankful to God that Phil has such a strong faith that enabled him to stand up and tell the rock solid biblical truth about homosexuality being a sin. It is a sin. As a Christian myself, I do not, under any circumstances, condone or support the homosexual lifestyle. I will not and I cannot because I am a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ AND I wholeheartedly believe the Scriptures to be the infallible and inerrant words of God Almighty. In other words, I would be an outright liar to call myself and proclaim myself to be a true, genuine Christian if I supported and condoned homosexuality (or any other kind of sinful action and/or behaviors). I will not compromise my faith or my Christian beliefs to appease other people, no matter who they are. And I certainly will not sacrifice my faith and my Christian beliefs on the altars of political correctness and tolerance. And with said, I reiterate that I stand with Phil Robertson, I fully support him, and I strongly commend him for his strong Christian beliefs and his boldness to speak them. Before I close, here is a powerful message I wanted to share with you. It was posted on the Stop Playing Church Facebook page.

If said gay activist is saying things that compare a large group of people (lets say, Christians) to people who have sex with animals and is being deliberately crass and offensive in his statements (talking about vaginas and anuses), then I would say, no I have no problem with a deliberately offensive gay activist being suspended from his tv show. (As that is the case here, Phil hasn't been "fired")

How specific?
How about: "I just *f-word* hate those stupid Christians man. They're in the closet every one of them". Would it be ok to fire someone who said that?
See, simply saying: "If he did the EXACT SAME THING doesn't answer my question. It's a matter of principle here, and whether there is one standard for those you agree with, and another for those you don't agree with.

Yes, they're intolerant. They could stand up and say "these views don't represent our views, as our actions have shown, but since we believe in the right to free speech we stand by Phil Robertson's right to give his opinion"

Just like Hobby Lobby could have said "we don't support using birth control, but since we believe in freedom of conscience we're going to let our employees follow theirs". You seemed to have a different view of the role of tolerance in employer-employee relationships in that case, though, and supported the employer imposing their political and social views on their employees' health care choices.

Why the change of heart in this case? What happened to the whole employers can do whatever they want and employees can find a new job if they don't like it line of thought?
