• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Since the demise of IDD:( , and the new rules, I rarely go to PRE. But when I do, I notice that the mods in PRE strictly enforce their rules prohibiting non-PRE folks from posting anything other than questions or "friendship" posts. Here, there seems to be a lot more tolerant attitude. In addition, perhaps because it's rather lenient, I notice a much greater participation of non-Catholic posters here. Without commenting on the difference in rule enforcement, I wonder if the more friendly attitude here has encouraged more dialogue/debate? It sure seems that there are more average posts per day here than over there, anyway.

In the past, I usually pretty much stayed out of PRE, figuring it was the Protestant forum, and I didn't have any business in there.

As for the situation now, I have had very little desire to go to PRE ever since the "Attn: Catholics Who Like To Post In Here" announcement (which has since been removed) that was made by one of the Staff members there a week or so ago.

Kind of killed my desire for ecumenical exchange, if you know what I mean. :)

Wolseley, I know what you mean.

Michelle, I hear you too.

Our friendliness may indeed be a factor.

I think perhaps moreso is that people are finding that they can get Catholic answers on Catholic issues from Catholics here at OBOB.

Sure, we Catholics are free to roam the CF boards, as all Christians are free to do so.
And as all Christians are free to give their perspective on matters, so we Catholics are free to do so.

But, if one wants the Catholic position on a Catholic matter, this is the most appropriate forum.

We promise not to bite... *smiles ala Austin Powers*... hard.
Yeah, baby, yeah!!

I certainly appreciate all your responses. I only posted a few times in PRE and there was one person in particular who was a flamer and obvious anti-Catholic. I tried to communicate with this person through PMs, but they wouldn't even read them! Consequently, I've never felt too welcomed there. I guess it seems that our participation is wanted only if we agree with them. I, for one, am happy that non-Catholics feel comfortable coming here and asking questions. I can see the Holy Spirit works in this way at times. :priest:

I agree. I love having people come in to OBOB to ask an honest question. I have a lot of respect and admiration for people like that; it really speaks to the character of the individual.

I've felt the same thing, and actually find it interesting that others feel this way too. It's like every thing I say I need to disclaimer..."I am in no way intending to attack, debate, challenge, etc, etc, etc". It's definately not an environment conducive to converting people to their faith (which is ironic considering its the PRE).

Since we are open, more PREs will come here to ask us questions. When they see the truth in our responses, the seeds of conversion will be planted.

PRE harms only itself by keeping a closed atmosphere.
I think this is right on!
