  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A detail about the transfiguration I don't understand

In Matthew's account of the transfiguration, we find Peter, James and John in the presence of Jesus, Moses and Elijah. Now Moses is the only one that is dead; that is according to the Deuteronomy 34:5-6 and in Jude, Michael disputes with Satan over the body of Moses.
How can Moses be there unless he has been resurrected. If that happened, when would it have happened? Did that actually happen? If it didn't happen, then the there would have been interaction between the living and the dead which, I believe, may have been in violation of Jewish law.

Matthew 17:1-8 (NKJV)
Jesus Transfigured on the Mount
Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves;2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.”8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

We see from the scripture that "Moses and Elijah...(were) talking to Him(Jesus)." We can conclude that no part of the Jewish Law was violated as Jesus was present. That would seem to mean that Moses was not dead. I have only explored the obvious scenario but in it we run into a dilemma--Moses not dead, contrary to Deut 34:5-6.

What am I missing?

Earlier, I had put this into the Non-Denominational group but not much response.

God is entirely capable of resurrecting Moses, either temporarily or permanently, to allow him to participate in the vision. The vision is what is important. Moses symbolized the Law, and Elijah symbolized the Prophets, God brought them together and confirmed his Son to the disciples in a very powerful way.

To understand the significance of the transfiguration you need to read what Jesus said immediately before.

Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
(Matthew 16:28 ESV)
In all three of the synoptic gospels Jesus makes this statement and it is immediately followed by the transfiguration. He is showing the disciples a preview of what his kingdom will be like when he returns to earth.

The appearance of Moses wouldn't necessarily mean he had been resurrected. When the witch of Endor called up Samuel, Saul was able to see him. Jesus wouldn't have been violating the Law by talking to someone who was dead because he is lord of both the living and the dead. The restrictions that have been imposed on us wouldn't apply to him.
