• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Is there a link between having bipolar disorder and binge eating? If so, what is it?
Excellent question. Yes, there is a connection.
There is a lot of research on-line.
In my case I don't know about bingeing, but unless I take 5-HTP daily, there are times no matter how much I eat I never feel full or satisfied.
My brain does not register I've eaten anything. Very frustrating.
Knowing this I also drink a lot of fluids, and eat just a little, like a cup of soup instead of a serving bowl of soup, when I forget my 5-htp.
I also use a timer: 4 hours, that helps.
Some days I may go 8 to 16 hours and not feel hungry.
High fiber foods helps to feel fuller longer and are cheaper.

No. well not specifically.
I think people that suffer bipolar can have problems with addiction, and binge eating could be a symptom, but it wouldnt be the main issue.

Some foods can alter moods. Also many drugs used to stabilise bipolar do mess with peoples appetites.

When i was on lithium carbonate, the drug caused dry mouth which made me really thirsty. I couldnt eat certain foods, and would drink alot, but had to avoid sugary drinks. If I drank sugary drink i would need to drink more and more of it. The sugar would gives you a high and the the more you drink your body gets used to it, starts craving it and then feels horrible if you stop.

But that wouldnt be binge eating or drinking. Binge eating is really linked with dieting and bad eating habits..starving oneself and then eating to excess. Ive heard some ppl even go as far as to eat food from the garbage. The cause of it would be eating for comfort purposes.

People that have bipolar have up and down moods and its not necessarily linked with the food they eat all the time. But they can turn to food as a drug I suppose.

Some people with bipolar disorder will do whatever it takes to comfort themselves. In fact, a LOT of people without bipolar disorder use food for that purpose.

Some psychoactive medications can make you hungry (e.g., trazodone).
