Why would we ever need to? Do you mean like if we were in some land where Christians are persecuted and we were told to deny him or die? Even Peter denied him when threatened.
Peter denied Him before the Resurrection, so his offense is (more) understandable. I would take a bullet for a stranger in many circumstances.

Since you, brothers and sisters, are the Body of Christ, then I would have to say that I would take a bullet for Him, but in doing so He would take the bullet Himself.

Assuming that the question is, would you be martyred for the faith, I answered "I'm not sure." I pray that God would give me the strength to endure persecution and death for His son, but I also pray that He would forgive me if I failed Him.

That sums up my answer pretty much.

Do you think you will never be faced with that here in this country? At Columbine, a high school girl took a bullet in the head for Jesus . .she died. Do you think any of us are immune to such a thing happening to us also?

And Peter, who denied Christ before the ressurection, died unpside down on a cross because he did not think himself worthy to die upright like his Lord and Savior did.

This country is well on it's way to the time you will be required to become a martyr for you faith. Peter didn't entirely fail, he only prolonged the time. He could have been along side of Jesus. For those who are conforted with the thought that if you fail, and repent you will be free from maryrdon, I will say don't even let that get a seat in your mind, If that is the path God has for you, you will either do it or go to hell.

Backward in time

Honestly? I'm probably more like Peter than I'd like to admit.

As an American Christian, I'm so spoiled, it's ridiculous. I have absolutely no comprehension of being dragged out of my house in the middle of the night, a gun to my head and given the choice, "renouce your faith in Christ or die".

I do not mind dying so much.... but suffering is another matter.
I would like to believe that I would stand strong like the young saint who confessed faith just before being shot at Columbine HS.
It is unhealthy to say I would go looking for it. I think God wants us to live for Him more than die for Him.
Just thoughts...:(

That was sort of my point. I can't say what I would do right now. It's great that so many of you are comfortable/prepared/willing to lay down your lives, I'd like to think that I could muster the same courage. The safety and future of my wife and two children would also come into the picture in my case.

And if we were all as honest as you are here, we would say the same. :)

If we are a disciple of our Lord, why wouldnt we. Essentially he took the bullet for us. He didnt have to. But he did it. He endured the pain, ridicule, and death, for u s. Why would we even hesitate? "If I am a disciple of Christ, of whom shall I be afraid? What can man do to me. If they kill me, they only send me Straight to my Lord where I shall live forever." --- Ivan Moisev, Martyr for Christ, Russia ca. 1973.

While people here are bringing up Peter's denial of Christ, nobody has yet to bring up Peter's denial of his future denial of Christ. What happened when Jesus told him that he would deny him 3 times? What was his (albeit, perhaps a little hotheaded) response?

Point being that it would be quite easy for us to say "Oh sure, I'd take a bullet! No problem!!" But when it comes down to it we may have, as Peter had, an open mouth, insert foot moment.

Someone here mentioned death isn't as much a problem as suffering. I kinda feel the same way there. If I were looking at a gunshot to the head, where I would immediately at least lose conciousness, I still am not sure what I would do. But I'd probably be more likely to do that then face something like crucifixion......

1.Death and torture are scary things, no doubt. However, it can make it less scary when you know that God is even more scary. "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Mat. 10:28 NET) You may be afraid of what man may do to you if you don't desert God, but you should be even more fearful of what God will do to you if you do desert Him.

2.Also, I Corinthians 10:13 says, in the NET, "No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it." God will give us the strength that we need when the time comes that we need it. We should not be troubled if we do not have the strength before we need it. Jesus told us to ask for our daily bread. We are to get God's strength daily as well. Just as Israel had to gather manna fresh every day, so we must gather the the strength from God that we need for this day. God does not give us the strength for tomorrow, until tomorrow comes. See also Mat. 6:25-34.

In my own personal experience, almost two years ago, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I underwent chemo and other medical procedures, and I had pain on a level that I never knew of before. Oh, I knew severe pain was possible, but I didn't know what it was like. I had always been one to be fearful of torture, and I ended up being in some pretty torturous pain myself. While I certainly wasn't enjoying myself, I made it through it. God gave me the strength that I needed, when I needed it.

3.Our primary battle is not a physical one anyway. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens." (Eph. 6:12 NET) For more enlightenment on this subject, read Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand. I won't say anything out of that book because to give only an excerpt wouldn't do it justice. Suffice it to say that people have overcome and are still overcoming physical tortures through the power and love of Christ. Read the book. It is cheap on Amazon.
