A black hospital patient went on a walk with an IV drip. A security guard thought he was stealing medical equipment
A black man says he was racially profiled by white police officers while he was being treated at an Illinois hospital and went for a walk hooked up to an IV drip.

Police arrested Shaquille Dukes, 24, of misdemeanor disorderly conduct after a security guard called them, saying that Dukes was trying to steal medical equipment.

Maybe if he wasn't attached to the medical equipment, you might have foiled a crime. But he's a patient, the needle is in his arm, the equipment is beeping, this security guard is too incompetent to have this job.

I think most of the time these incidents are caused by bruised ego. The man and his brothers rightfully got angry at this security guard for thinking their stealing, he probably realized it too when he heard the equipment beeping, but rather than apologize and let him continue his walk, he felt he had to "get back at them." And this is why laws like the one in Oregon were passed. However, the police also play a role in this, they need to stop being so stupid. The man asked to speak to his doctor and then they moved to arrest him, the situation could have really been handled better, but when black people are involved, these people all puff up their chests.

Which is why (even as a white) I sometimes find myself siding with guys like Desmond F. Scott.

My observation of security guards in hospitals isn’t flattering. Most have nothing to do. I was in the ER and they stood around yammering. Not one or two. But six deep in conversation.

I glanced at my watch and an hour later they were still at it. The supervisor was in the lot. I don’t have much faith in their capacity or common sense.

If I had to guess - it's because he's black and was doing something that's not uncommon for hospital patients to do.
IV walking while Black.

Stealing an IV by hooking yourself up to it first - now that's commitment!

Even moreso than disguising himself in a hospital gown!

This reminds me of the Chappelle bit about police responding and thinking he broke into his ow house, “He’s still here! *bang* I’ve seen this before, he broke into the house and hung up pictures of his whole family. Open and shut case, Johnson... now let’s sprinkle some crack on him.”

@Ana the Ist This is what racism actually looks like Ana. Wake me when something like this happens to a white person in the US. Being overcharged for a concert ticket isn't even in the same universe.

That's common? I've never in my life seen anyone walking down a public street attached to an IV drip, and I'd be very curious if I did.

I did my PhD at a hospital/research center. Outside the medical center, it was common to see patients walking with their IV along the sidewalk. Some were there to get some exercise/movement, others were there to simply smoke. It’s a common practice (especially for patients that smoke as hospitals are usually smoke-free campuses).

Ah, so you know this because you spent time around a hospital. Occur to you that other people like me and those cops haven't? Well, thinking rationally doesn't further the narrative, does it?

Cops interact with hospitals and hospital staff all the time and this guy was originally stopped by a security guard employed by the hospital.

Well, thinking rationally doesn't further the narrative, does it?

Rational thinking like "who would hook themselves up to an IV just to steal it?"

You've got to admit - the security guard and cops hardly rate in the rational thinking stakes
