  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can a non christian ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit? Can they ask in Jesus heavenly name for the Holy Spirit?

And can christians also ask in the heavenly name of Jesus for the Holy Spirit to guide non christians?

I'll give this a shot, Tam.

I believe that a non-Christian can call on God and Jesus for salvation, after which the Holy Spirit will help them. Otherwise it's just so many words.

I believe that a Christian can ask for a non-Christian to be open to the guidance of Holy Spirit (or more probably his conscience) to salvation.

Is that confusing enough? ;)

Hmmmmmm..............

my mind keeps asking more and more about a cup of cold water and the flow of the Holy Spirit...........

Hmmmmm............still thinking.

I guess I wonder because at some point when a non christian is reaching out to Jesus for the first time.........I keep thinking the Holy Spirit is with them.......helping them.....guiding them. Otherwise why would they feel compelled to turn to Jesus unless there heart was watered and seed planted..........their heart softened? I would say it is the Holy Spirits doing.

Still thinking........

That is correct. It is the Holy Spirit's work within us to bring us to truth, and not something our sinful nature can do.

Tam, that may well be. I don't know what "drove" me to pray the Lord's Prayer and 23rd Psalm during a horrible period in my life, but I know that gradually I understood what they were really saying. Then I was "driven" to go to church and have ever since whether I wanted to or not. And finally, after several months, I was "driven" to read the Bible - from Genesis 1:1 on. At that point I KNEW that it was all true and have not doubted from that time on. Not sure when the Holy Spirit took over for me, but it's obvious to me that he did! :)

As I recall, part of the Holy Spirit's duty is to convict unbelievers and to influence them to accept Christ. In other words, that they should be saved. When they are born again, then the Holy Spirit will be a more active partcipant in their lives.

Tam:angel:

Tam,God does all the work, if we love God then we must study to show ourselves approved.
I am sending you this chapter from the "little book" of Revelation chapter 10.
We must share the true gospel with others, christian or non-christian.

Hasn’t God chosen the poor people out of the world, (christian or non-christian, that's the True Gospel that Jesus preached) those being rich in faith and so heirs of the Kingdom that He has promised for the ones who love Him? But you have despised the poor people! Don’t the rich oppress you? And they drag you into the courts. Don’t they blaspheme the good Name that is called on you?” (James 2:5-7).

ON THE NATURE OF INSPIRATION

There are, according to the witness of explicit verses, three levels or degrees of inspiration, two of which were utilized in the giving of the Scripture. Of the first the Lord said, “Blessed by the Spirit are the poor people, because the Kingdom of the Heavens belongs to them” (Matthew 5:3). And so every poor man on the surface of the planet does receive the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit which witnesses to him, though in non-verbal form, all those truths, however infrequently confessed by word, recognized as self-evident in the heart by the whole of the lower class, children of the Kingdom, be they ever so alien and therefore ludicrous or repugnant to the children of the evil one. And of this type is the witness of I Peter 4:6, “For this very reason is the Gospel preached also to those who are dead, so that they, though having been judged according to the judgment of men through the flesh, might yet live according to the will of God through the Spirit” — for those who, having been predestined to be conformed to His image, are found like Him in this world (Romans 8:29; I John 4:17), being of the lower class and so children of the Kingdom and its heirs, already having the true form of the Gospel written on their hearts but without words, will accept it, recognizing it as the same as the inward witness always known to them, whenever they find it presented verbally, and so will become at that point in this life or the next “born again” or “regenerated” by the breaking through to the level of consciousness through the witness now of the word of the Scripture of the message given them of old by the Spirit; and as in I Peter 1:23-25.

The second level is the result of a powerful impulse from that same Spirit, the reception of which automatically transforms the recipient into a prophet. Yet the message from the Hidden World delivered in this manner is given in a non-verbal form and filters through the personality of the prophet involved before being committed to writing, where it can become distorted to some extent by his prior inclination or bias or where elements of his prior education can adhere to it. Of this type was the communication that came to all the prophets of the Old Testament, and all the authors of the New Testament books as well with the sole exception of the apostle John when he received the book of Revelation from the Holy One, the True One. And Paul clearly witnesses of the distinction between this level and that higher one of verbal inspiration to be introduced later at the time of the giving of the perfection of knowledge and prophecy, saying in I Corinthians 13:8-13, “Love will have no end. But whether there are prophecies, they will be done away with; or tongues, they will cease; or knowledge, it will be done away with; because we know partially and we prophesy partially. When that which is perfect comes, however, that which is partial will be done away with. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see things enigmatically through a looking glass; but then face to face. I know now partially; but then I will know fully, just as I am fully known. So there remain faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

Thus the book of Revelation, in which we find written out for us in unmistakable detail the course that history has in fact taken and the institutional forms that have in fact arisen during so many ages as have passed since its giving, emerges as the apex of the whole prophetic process and as the lens through which all concepts and predictions of the whole Bible are to be observed and analyzed and as the touchstone by which they are to be measured, in which the Old Testament latter-day prophecies are reapplied to the group of the true elect and purified of their Israelite and Judean nationalist discoloration, and in which the whole eschatological content of the remainder of the New Testament is structured and ordered.

Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways, O King of the nations!
Who will not fear You, Lord, and glorify Your Name?
For You alone are the Holy One.
For all nations will come and worship before You
because Your judgments have been revealed!

— Revelation 15:3-4

Tam, I am also sending you this prayer from that "little book" of revelation chapter 10, to teach your children. Print it out, and pray it every day.

O God

We have seen You in the face of Jesus
Having no place to lay down His head
Yet with the perfect Law for the weary
and burdened

But You are ever the Most High
Great and fearful

And the saints were dumbstruck
Seeing the King of kings who rules from
all eternity
Among them as a peasant
Homeless, despised
the offscouring of the people
They all smiled when He spoke of love

But You are ever the Self-existent One
Lord of glory

The cold of the manger
Blasphemy, that is blasphemy!
Let Him come down from the Cross if
He is Christ, the Son of God

But You are ever exalted and upraised
the Root of all being

No, it is I. Do not be afraid
I have believed You, Lord. I will not
be afraid
And when the last sun is extinguished I
will not be afraid forever
Peace I leave with you
My peace I give unto you

But You are ever gracious and merciful
full of pity

These are Christ's words promising the Holy Spirit.

John 16:5-9 (NASB)
5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment;
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

So, concerning your question, I would say that a non christian could ask the HS for guidance concerning their salvation. We can certainly ask for help before we come to that saving grace, as the Lord knows our heart, or how would anyone every come to Christ?

On unbelievers receiving God's Holy Spirit, Acts 2:1-(37-40)41-47!

It's recorded in the scriptures that God does'nt hear a sinners prayer, if this was/is true, where would any of us be? God always meets us at our point of need, cp. Acts 8:1-4, 12:1-19, 20-31. many say "I'm just a sinner saved by Grace....", I say what God says about me & untold millions of others, "I 'was' a sinner, 'til saved by God's Grace through Messias, Christ Jesus The Righteous" [Jn.3:14-21, Rom.10:4-7, 8-13, Gal.3:13-14], "as many as are led by The Spirit, they are the children of God":amen: .

An unbeliever asking for God's Holy Spirit is like someone asking for the rights of a country foreign to them, without meeting it's criteria. First things first! Some have received God's Spirit when they first accept Christ as their personal Saviour & Lord, maybe more do not. In closing, Tongues or some other gift is not God's Holy Spirit, just the evidence or leaves thereof. I'll take the Fruit Of The Spirit thereof anytime as Messias, Jesus Christ The Righteous cursed a fig tree for having leaves [signs], but no fruit with them, cp. [I Cor.14:12, Gal.5:22-26]! God Bless.

Unbelievers cannot have the infilling or indwelling of the Holy Spirit, but they do have the Holy Spirit to call and convict them and to reveal God to them.

Somebody said that an unbeliever asking for the Holy Sprit is like someone demanding the rights of a foreign country.

That's right. In the same way, I have the authority and the inheritance of my father, but I can't claim those things of someone else's father, as though I'm enitled to it as a son.

i don't know if this will actually help, or just throw a monkey wrench into things... but i can tell you that God hears and answers the prayers of even someone who hasn't formally been saved... He did for me. Altho, granted, i may have been younger than "the age of accountability". all i can tell you is God definatly heard, and ANSWERED (quite promptly, in fact) the confused prayers of a very scared little 10 year old girl. He saved my life... in many more ways than the "Christian" way one would typically think of.

i believe this lead me to be open to Him when i was old enough to be ready.
