  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Folks, I have XP, 7, and 8 all installed on my hard drive, and all three work great. But let me help you with Windows 8.

On the Start Page, drag the Desktop tile to the top left corner. Now you only have to press Enter to go to your Desktop.

On your Desktop, go online and install the free Classic Shell Start Button. Voila! Your Desktop now works like XP and 7, and you can take your time learning how to operate Windows 8.

The start button should have been left alone in the first place..
I've yet to have my machine operating the way I need it to

Why have to go through all of that to get to the desk top in the first place?
It should have been left alone, and metro being the one to be dragged..after all,it consists mainly of bloatware apps.

You may of course try one of these replacements some of which cost money. I guess MS could have given users a toggle on/off option for this to start with but I also guess they knew which option would have been chosen by most users. If you don't listen to customers they will eventually walk away - simple business rule.

I've had start button back for awhile.."classic shell"(which is free).
When I upgraded..nah,it was more of a step back to .1,the start button quit working..then mysteriously started working again a day later.

I bought the Windows 8 Student offer a few weeks ago since I was getting sick of using Linux distributions though I wouldn't mind dual booting with one.

While I think the whole metro thing is useless for desktop and laptop users, it doesn't really stop me from using Windows 8.1. One of the features I like about it is the integrated Skydrive which works like Dropbox (I think) and I believe is much faster than Dropbox. This is helpful for me since I have a workspace folder there for development and all changes are uploaded to the cloud so I can access them easily at college.

I also read somewhere that 8.2 will bring back the start menu.

Why are you sick of Linux distro's?

If it's software development you're doing, did you try git when using Linux?

It's rumoured that the start menu is back in 8.2 which should be out soon. Will it be a normal start menu? git

Mainly personal preference, I had no problems using it I just prefer Windows (sorry for everyone who thinks otherwise). Like I said though, I wouldn't mind dual booting with a Linux distro, the integrated workspaces were quite useful.

I had git installed when I was using it, but since I wasn't really developing anything big, I just stuck with Dropbox.
