  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Or, putting it another way, was God Father before He created?

Indeed. And we become fathers in an analogical sense. God's fatherhood is eternal and supreme. Our fatherhoods are like his, but in miniature and, of course, marred by sin. But whereas God will always be father we will not be. Our fatherhoods are finite, beginning at a certain point and ending at a certain point. Absurdly, my sons, Lord willing, will be my brothers in the New Heavens and New Earth! God is the only father.

It is what the text says, in Hebrew and in most translations.

Yes but that's not what's controversial. Everyone knows that the text says: בְנֵי־הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙. The question is: what does the phrase
בְנֵי־הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ refer to? Fallen angels is only one of three major positions and commentators and pastors alike are divided. I personally think that the referent "angels" is unlikely for grounds already mentioned and other reasons.

Then how did they make giants?
And how "also after that" ('that' being the pre-flood days) there were giant tribes that God commanded to be eradicated?
Also, texts on demonology suggest demons are either fallen angels and / or dead nephilim.
Who knows about the technicalities of the hybridization? I don't.

You see, throughout time, half of the story is allegorised or ignored.
The Bible is not just about God and mankind, it is also about the goings on between God and the gods and man.

I'm not aware of any inspired texts on demonology.

The other major interpretations of this text neither allegorize nor ignore the text. Are you aware of the other positions?

Could you be more specific? What biblical texts make you think that the Nephilim were giants?
Not only the Nephilim in Genesis 6.
Come on. you know the texts describing giants.
I have no list of them here, sorry..
But Goliath was one.

Yes. But Goliath could not have descended from the Nephilim because everyone but Noah's family died in the flood. The Philistines descended from Noah.

So are you sure that the bible says that the Nephilim were giants?

Yes.
Check out that lecture or other lectures from M. Heiser.
He can provide the insight much better than i can.

I'm not sure what you're quoting here.

Since I don't think there's anything to this position I'm not going to watch the lecture. But if you can provide some Scripture that demonstrates that "Nephilim" refers to giants then I'm all ears.

Let me translate it myself from the NBG51 Dutch Bible, my go-to-Bible:

Genesis 6:4

The giants were in those days on earth, and also after that, when the sons of God came to the daughters of man, and they bore their children; these are the great of the fore-time (days of old), men of name (renown).

This is in full harmony with the Hebrew text.
This happened also in the post flood days, these are the tribes that had to be eradicated.
It is always implied or stated they were giants.

Why should i doubt Scripture?
Because Augustine didn't believe it?

I'm sorry I don't see any reference to giants here. Could you show me where it is implied or stated and not just assumed by you?
