Today is my 22nd day in a tentative 40 day fast (began June 16th). I say tentative because I'm not committed to 40 days. Each day I ask the Lord if He wants me to continue. I want to continue until He says "stop". If He sustains me, I have enough fat in reserve to last at least 70 days. :0) Assuming Jesus had a very low percentage of body fat, I can only imagine what he looked like and felt after 40 days of fasting. Philippians III.10

I've never gone beyond 7 or 10 days before. I can truly say He is sustaining me. I feel fine. I'm not hungry (only tempted when I smell other's meals), I'm alert and feasting on the Bread of Life; I'm physically able to perform normal activities (I ride my bicycle to church), but I notice my weakness if I try to exert myself or when I stand up after sitting or praying. II Cor. XII.9-10
My regimen is a multivitamin, a pinch of salt (electrolytes), and lots of water each day.

Obedience is better than sacrifice. However long the Lord upholds me, it has been a wonderful and beneficial experience. I am drawing near to God and He is drawing near to me. I can't remember having such nutritious communion with Him.

Day 29 update: I am now supplementing my water with some grape juice. I occasionally take a little Pepto Bismal if my stomach gets queasy.
I'm a little weaker, but otherwise doing fine. I know I'm at the threshold of my limitations because I became exhausted on the short bicycle ride to church which is normally a breaze for me. I've discontinued all other exercise regimens.
I'm planning to continue until the Lord says stop or 40 days, whichever comes first.

Day 39: This past week I've resumed my water only fast (no grape juice, multi-vitamin or salt). I add a little lemon juice to my water which is suppose to aid in cleansing the body, but other than that just water.
I am planning to end my fast after 40 days with a gradual vegetable and fruit diet. If that goes ok, then I'll add some rice.
I'm following the guidelines I've read on fasting by Jack Hayford and Bill Bright.
It has been a remarkable and rewarding experience. I can truly say the Lord has sustained me. I can not remember having such deep communion with Him. The emotional and spiritual struggles I was having before the fast seem like distant memories. I've lost 40 pounds and feel much better. I'm going to try to improve my diet in the future and lose another 40, though more gradually.

I am in awe. I truly am. I am just starting to learn about fasting, just starting to feel called to a fast, and I'm struggling! I hate feeling hungry, but I long to do this with God someday soon. And here you are...Tuke has completed 40 days and the OP is in the midst of her 40 days...all I can say is WOW, what inspirations you are!!

Did Jesus say fast from food?

Mmmh don't think so although this is always a topic for discussion is it not?

You guys may be wasting your time while you could be enjoying food.

Check the bible but read between the lines don't just read it literally.

The bible has a hidden message behind all that is written.

I guess then it's how one interprets it.

Good luck and God bless as you fast.

Jesus fasted while in the desert, jesusmyhealer. However, fasting is something that should be done with care. There are different kinds of fasts. There are fasts which one takes out only certain foods (usually favorites), and for eating only bland tasting foods. There are water only-no food fasts, and liquids only-no foods fasts.

I would not recommend a 40 day fast with water only. My friend did one that was water only for 30 days, and when she got off the fast, she began gaining weight. She is overweight to this day from it as she wasn't able to get off the excess weight. She was very slender when she started the fast. Fasting that long without food will nearly destroy your thyroid. Be sure to take vitamins while fasting.

whenever the lord led me into a fast, it was a pretty short one so far, never longer than 2 or 3 days. he is very gentle with me in that certain area.

fasts are greatly beneficial, they bring spiritual riches that i could not get in any other way. they can give great rest and serenity to our tortured minds, ever active emotions and bring us into the presence of god, a peaceful state of being.

What a beautiful way to describe it, :amen:

Day 40 + 10: As a follow-up I just want to say how valuable the Foru.ms' Sticky guidelines for fasting were to me. I can't recommend them more highly for anyone considering fasting whether for one day or more. I had never done more than 10 days before and the guidelines were indispensable in preparing me for what to expect, what the Lord expects, and reaping the best results (which I am continuing to reap).
Thank you to all for your encouraging words.

One personal recommendation I would make is that soup would have been a better food to break my fast with rather than fruits and vegetables. It took 4 or 5 days for my stomach to "reboot" and soup was milder and more settling. Chicken noodle was especially appealing.
