Hey! My chruch just started doing this series call 40 Days of perpose....and I had heard that other churches around the nation were doing this as well.

Well...if you are, of if you're reading the book....I guess this would be the forum to talk abut it...cuz I just wanted a place to discuse ideas and other thoughts on this...plus, the book recomended that it would be a good idea to discuse it w/ others...sooo I thought this would be a great place to do it...

If at all possible do the book with at least one other person (that can be difficult since it's a daily exercise). I was about 30 days in on my solo study when our church started and my wife (who was planning on reading it after me) wanted to start. I decided to start over with her.

We read the chapter aloud and then jot down the scripture chapters and verses (which I later copy and paste from Biblegateway into a word doc). We also discuss the question of the day together.

The book really helps bring home the fact that we are here on Earth to please God.

Our church will begin a 40 day adventure as well beginning Nov. 15. We will pray and fast and "let every heart prepare Him room." The purpose, of course, is to become more like Christ. To have our lives hid in Him, to become holy as He is holy. We do these 40 day journeys twice a year. We also do smaller ones throughout the year. Today is one of those mini-journeys. Today we pray that we will not, like Judas, give Him a kiss of betrayal.

Peace.

The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.

It's a 40 chapter book that attempts to show you (through scriptural backing) what your purpose on Earth is. The book is intended to be read one chapter a day and there are points to ponder, questions to ask yourself at the end of each chapter.

It is not meant as a replacement for the Bible or anything like that.

I can remind myself that life is really about living for God and not myself, by bearing in mind that I am not of the world. The advertising around me is worldly.

I mentally store a healthy amount of wisdom from God, (often obtained from scripture and nightly prayer), and use this as a focus during my day. It helps to keep my hunger for God and attention on Him throughout the hours which satisfies me in a much more fulfilling sense than any materialistic thing could possibly hope to achieve.

I also have the added advantage of never having really been a materialistic person :)

My answer for this question focused on the vast amount of human history, how insignificant my life is in the grand scheme of time. From Adam and Eve up to the babies born the second you read this.

Back in my "heathen days" I always had a feeling like my life was a movie, and I was the star. I was somehow different from everyone around me, everyone who ever existed, as if they were supporting role characters in my biography. Then my wife had our first child. Now life seemed to be about her. Then I got diabetes, and I realized my mortality. Had you ever had a point in your life whether you questioned your own mortality? Like you were different and somehow would never die? Getting a chronic disease reminds you that you are indeed mortal and will die, perhaps sooner than you'd expected if you don't change your lifestyle.

In terms of human history on earth...I will be forgotten in time. Do any of you know that much about your great great grandparents? Even those who we honor with statues, eventually have those statues pulled down when regimes change.

So I guess I looked at my insignificance and the great significance of the Creator.

Our Church is doing this tooo.

At first I thought it was a bit of overkill, because we are reading the book, a chapter a day, then the sermons or on it as well as sunday school and small group.

We are still in week one, and I have to say that I am impressed with it. All seem to touch on it a bit differently, and God has shown me something everyday. Yesterday's thought that stuck out for me, was the idea that we are not going to be just sitting on puffy clouds and playing harps when we get to heaven, but we will be busy doing stuff that is fullfilling and pleasing to God at the sametime.
I thougth that it was a kinda cool concept.

Our church started the 40 Days of Purpose on Oct. 12th along with 8 other churches in our area and many more across the country.

It has been very good so far. The message our pastor gave last week on the subject of worship was especially good.

The book is well-written and in simple terms to understand. My wife and I have enjoyed it thus far. Not to be too critical but I do have one minor complaint. I would like it better if the scripture references (Book, Chapter and Verse) were given within the text along with the quote. This would make it easier to refer to your own Bible as you are reading the book.

I thought lesson 11 (this Wednesday) was very good. The idea that God wants to be my best friend as well as my Lord and Savior hit me like a ton of bricks.

I'm looking forward to the next week.

Satan is mad, and won't stop trying to "win" us back. Last Sunday for example, I didn't get much sleep and was a real grouch waking up, when we got in the car my husband realized the fan didn't work (no heat, and it was COLD) and when he got out to check on it noticed that our tire was flat as could be. So we moved everything into our other car (a 1992 Geo Metro) that isn't even inspected, cause I don't think it is road safe, especially with a child. It started and it sounds like a military tank because the muffler needs replaced. We seriously prayed the entire way to Church hoping that 1) the car would make it and 2) that we wouldn't get a ticket for having an uninspected car. Thank the Lord we got there, and although the other cars fan still doesn't work, we got the tire fixed, so at least we have a "safe" car.

Has anyone else been impressed how this book seems to know what you need? Last night right before we started reading, I said to my husband how when we started this I was so excited and enthusiastic, but as it goes on I am not as excited. Low and behold, the topic last night was Worship That Pleases God (13) and towards the end it said that God understands that you sometimes are tired or don't feel like worshiping him, but when you do, that is sacrificing yourself for God and that pleases him.
