Many.

The one I concerned the most: Communication breakdown. This problem does not exist a few decades ago.

How do you connect communications breakdown to the year 2012? What is significant about that year when it comes to communications breakdown or any other scientific problem?

The strange nature of 2012 is: If any of the bad things happened, nobody can do anything about it, even we know it now. This is very different from the Y2K problem.

You should clarify what you mean. I have no idea what you're getting at.

I assume he means wireless communications failure.

Satellites going deaf, GPS navigation failure, the earth becoming one big dead zone.

AV is right. The wireless part of communication is a concern, the wired part of communication is tied up to the electricity, which could also be a concern. Oddly, the part of the most concern is not science related, but is sociology/psychology related. We may become our worst enemy in case anything went wrong in 2012.

The solar cycle, the geomagnetism, I did not know that specific events in these two processes could be tied up by the time of 2012. But it seems likely.

Of course, why not 2011 or 2013, or even 2015? There is no reason why couldn't the events happen at any other year in the coming decade or decades. But since we have the date 2012 popped out by other reason(s), then the prophecy is simply another factor contributes to the coincidence. The more factors gather together, the more strange the situation would be.

Recently, people called my attention to the rate change of polar wandering. Well, this plate tectonic myth could also play a part in the event, even it is thought to be a sluggish process and is not likely to respond quickly to anything. But, have you heard creationists suggested a crazy idea of the "accelerated tectonics"? Tell you what, they are not the people made this suggestion first. I have heard this model back in 1970's when there wasn't any tectonics/Flood model made by any creationist. The sudden shift of lithosphere is an old geologic speculation, but it is still waiting to be falsified. If you could imagine the consequence of a sudden shift of lithosphere, then the flood described in movie 2012 (particularly, the flood over the Himalayan, impressive.) would become possible (not by a tsunami caused by the struck of a meteorite).

The more I said, the more questions you might have. That is right. This thing is very complicated and nobody knows the answer. 2012 is just a date, but the rest is all about science. It is very funny that I have never paid any attention to the day-to-day record of sunspot until recent. It is all because of the 2012 date. As a layman to the study of sun, even I can see something is funny up there.

Wait wait wait... you are saying theres a bunch of things that could go awry with technology, our climate or pertaining to natural disasters at virtually any moment, but you can't connect any of this to the year 2012. However, you make the connection due to the "other" prophecies about 2012? Basically, you're just speculating that something could happen without any evidence what-so-ever. This is common fear-mongering.

As someone said, a lot of people are going to feel very stupid on the first of January 2013, provided they are intelligent enough to feel ashamed.

Whoever said that must have overlooked the fact that 'intelligent people' cannot prove it is 2009 right now.

The years AD1 - 4 didn't pass peer review.

Sure they can. The calendar is set and not reliant on any exact date for the potential birth of a carpenter's son.

How can you "quickly" move the lithospheric plates over the aesthenosphere? Even if the contact is relatively "sharp" as recently hypothesized (LINK) as opposed to a more gradual differentiation, that "sharpness" is still on the order of about 11km or so.

It isn't like the lithosphere is just slipping around willy-nilly on the aesthenosphere.

Now, if you are talking changing plate movement from a couple cm/year to a couple more cm/yr then maybe you could "accelerate" it, but how exactly does one propose to slide the plates all over at miles/hour?

If you could imagine the consequence of a sudden shift of lithosphere, then the flood described in movie 2012 (particularly, the flood over the Himalayan, impressive.) would become possible (not by a tsunami caused by the struck of a meteorite).

I have only seen a few of the "ads" for this nonsense movie coming out and I would think you'd pretty much have to do it using "cartoon physics" as opposed to what we have on the ground.

So how ya gonna lift a layer of rock that is about 50-200km thick depending on where you are on the globe, away from the aesthenosphere sufficiently to slip the whole thing around?

I am sure you know the action of a glacier "surge". I am not a glaciologist and I do not know how exactly it works (e.g. how much water contact is needed). The possible sudden shift of lithosphere could have a similar mechanism. It does not have to have a long-distance of shifting. In my imagination, it could be similar to the mechanism and the movement of a big earthquake. The scenario is something like one who jerks a swimming pool forcefully and makes it move for a few centimeter in a second. I do believe there is enough lubricant material accumulated between the asthenosphere and lithosphere to facilitate the conditions.

A.D. 2012 represents a number of true scientific problems which we have no answer to them, and will not have answer even 100 years after 2012. This date is certainly different from any of the previous false alarms in terms of scientific content. This date will not be a concern just two decades ago. But it is a scientifically legitimate concern today. To dismiss this "prophecy" based on science simply shows your ignorance to science.

Are you using some definition of "science" and "scientific" that I'm unfamiliar with?

Is your b-day or your anniversary "just a calendar" day to you?

No, and neither is Dec. 31st. But then again, no Dec. 31st is any more special than another other Dec. 31st - at least according to the calender.

I'll tell you what's going to happen. I'm going to throw a huge end of the world party, wake up the next morning with a hangover, and go grab a coffee.

Yessir

...and in the very unlikely chance it does happen, I'll be too drunk too care, and maybe the world does need to end anyways.

HAHA!! This is awesome!! If this happens, please, by all means, invite me!!

I personally think this whole "world ending in 2012" is a bunch of crap. And if it does, and I'm out a party livin' it up, jokes on me.

Anyways, I heard Heaven's a pretty cool place, so I probably won't care much if I die at 33 years.

(P.S. This thread is pretty interesting to read, nonetheless.)

Lubricant material. Lubricant material?

You dont have to be a glaciologist to know enough to know that anything like a log that might be within a glacier is soon completely shredded by the movement within the glacier. The ice doesnt stay as one nice solid chunk. The people who think "noahs ark" might be in a glacier would be looking for noahs toothpicks. In the terminal moraine that is.

Consider what even a small earthquake does; those of us who ahve seen the g round moving in waves know solid ground not all that solid.
Try imagining how much internal movement there would be in a tectonic plate dragging rapidly over its substrate. The rock would be fractured into tiny pieces moving like gravel dumped off a truck.
