There are many people who speak the right words but have the wrong heart. Many so-called Christians have learned the Christian vocabulary, but they do not know Christ. The mark of real Christian life is obedience. The first thing to obey is the gospel, to believe in Christ as Saviour and Lord. The word "in" is not strong enough in the English translation. In Greek, it is more like "into" So we could say that we need to believe "into" Christ.
A recent survey in Australia shows that the vast majority of churchgoers do not identify with Christ. Other things are more important to most people. For many it is their politics, their sports team or some other worldly interest. Those people are dead in sin even though they say they believe. Newsflash: the devil believes, but he's going to the Lake of Fire.
An honest sinner has far more hope than a fake churchgoer. God is far more willing to forgive than we are to be forgiven. If you will seek God honestly, no matter how messed up you are, He will deliver you. The Bible says that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. If you keep asking Lord Jesus to help you, to deliver you, to take complete control of your life, He will start you on the road to freedom. God is merciful, gracious, loving and kind. He sent Jesus to die in your place. If you come to God saying that your only plea is that Jesus died for you, then He will accept you.
