  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What do y'all think about the book 1984 by George Orwell? I've read nice reviews by Christian scholars in regards to its advocacy of free speech, but as I've been reading through it, I've definitely noticed a distinctly anti-Christian slant. For instance, Orwell compares faith in Jehovah to faith in Big Brother. Moreover, Orwell seems to have a hatred of morality and in particular chastity. At one point, the protagonist begins to hate chaste women so much that he wants to rip their dress up and rape them. The single most problematic lines in the novel up to the point that I have read so far is the following:

"Listen. The more men you've had, the more I love you. Do you understand that?"
"Yes, perfectly."
"I hate purity, I hate goodness. I don't want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones."

So, like I said, I'd like to hear all of your thoughts on this classic novel.

1984 by George Orwell is like the bible to the satanic societies that want to rule the world in the means of a world gov.

"Films, football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult…." - 1984, George Orwell

He was basically satanic and wanted to make the gov the God of the world. He talked about Big Brother who would watch people who where starting to open their real eyes to see the satanic take over. It's a terrible book but you can understand your enemies mind by reading it.

Orwell was an atheist and a socialist, but just because you hold some bad ideas doesn't mean you can't have some good ideas. I think it's a very good and important book. I think these days it actually gets more relevant with every passing year.

As to the troublesome lines you quote, I actually had reason to look that part up not long ago. Remember it's the character speaking, and he's speaking about the phony hypocritical goodness of the politicians. He's been brainwashed his whole life to believe their morality is actually moral, but he's now seeing through it and he hates it. Maybe he's over-reacting, I don't know, but I kinda wish Orwell had had him say it differently.

I think you're misinterpreting that bit. Orwell was definitely anti-authoritarian, and the protagonist was a rebel of the totalitarian Big Brother you describe.

I think it's a mindless sort of rebellion akin to the sexual revolution of the 60s. In both cases, young people want to rebel but rather than rebelling against the establishment, they rebel against tradition and morality.
