So much has been said about 1 Corinthians from both sides of this issue, but it has mainly been over the interpretation of a few words.
Well I think we can agree that both sides believe that the scriptures should be taken in context and as a whole to truely find the meanings. So in doing that I think we have to look at the verses before and after any scripture/verse we are studying.
1 Corinthians 7:1-2
1 Now concerning the things about which ye wrote unto me, it is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let EVERY man have his own wife, and let EVERY woman have her own husband.
G1538
ἕκαστος
hekastos
hek'-as-tos
As if a superlative of ἕκας hekas (afar); each or every: - any, both, each (one), every (man, one, woman), particularly.
In my KJV Bible, the 7th chapter has the heading that "Because God has established marriage". If we take the bible as a whole and in context we see how every man is to have his own wife. We also see in many places where the bible says that a man shall leave his parents and cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.
Looking at all the scriptures that tell how a wife should treat a husband, and how a husband should treat a wife, along with the scriptures I spoke of above, I find it amazing that people can say that the bible doesn't establish the institution of marriage, and that institution is kept the same way in both the OT and the NT.
If every man is to have a woman, and every woman is to have a man, who does that leave?
Gen 2:18-24
18And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
19And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
20And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
21And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
We also see in verse 18 how it is not good for man to be alone so God made him a help mate, a woman, Not a man!
